Amazing Footage: Regional Jet Landed This Morning Without Its Nose Gear, Everyone Safe

Myanmar National Airlines flight UB103 from Yangon to Mandalay arrived on time Sunday morning — but the nose gear on the Embraer ERJ-190 failed to extend.

After a go-around and a failed attempt at an alternate gear extension plane entered a holding pattern to burn off fuel and then the crew executed a ‘nose up’ landing, where they keep the plane’s nose up as long as they can “bringing the aircraft to a halt on the runway on both main gear struts and the nose of the aircraft.”

Here is footage the purports to show the aircraft landing:

And here’s evacuation footage from inside the cabin:

On arrival smoke entered the passenger cabin. Everyone evacuated (only a handful brought their personal belongings with them off the aircraft). All 82 passengers and 7 crew on board got out safely, though the regional jet sustained significant damage. Landing gear malfunctions usually end well – though I’m surprised that the airport doesn’t appear to have been in a position to foam the runway to limit risk of fire.

It was only just Wednesday when a Biman Bangladesh Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 skidded off the runway at the Yangon airport and all 35 on board were injured (and 18 hospitalized, but since released).

  1. Wow. I know nothing about piloting, but to my uneducated eye it looks like the pilot did a pretty good job in terms of keeping the nose up while landing.

I was in Myanmar earlier this year and took a few domestic flights on a competitor. It seemed like the airline was well run. And in researching the options beforehand, I got the same reports on MNA.

  2. Wow that’s the worst footage of the plane landing. Keep it in frame buddy!

  3. Kudos to Myanmar, They burned off fuel before landing and I ddnt observe one overhead bin opened on the way out.

  4. They should have told all the passengers to go to the back of the plane ……
