3000 Easy American Express Membership Rewards Points

I receive compensation for content and many links on this blog. Citibank is an advertising partner of this site, as is American Express, Chase, Barclays and Capital One. Any opinions expressed in this post are my own, and have not been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by my advertising partners. I do not write about all credit cards that are available -- instead focusing on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same). Rakuten, formerly known as Ebates, is giving 3000 American Express Membership Rewards points to new members who make $25 in online purchases within 90 days. Rakuten is a shopping portal that gives you points for your online purchases, so that $25 – that you’d have spent anyway – earns you points, too.

Rakuten lets you earn cash back or Membership Rewards points. If you have an American Express Membership Rewards-earning card (the American Express® Gold Card is the Amex I spend the most on) you should prefer Membership Rewards points, since trading off cash back effectively buys Amex points at just 1 cent apiece and I value them at much more than that. And by the way if you have an existing Rakuten account, you can switch to earn Membership Rewards points under account settings.

Doctor of Credit thinks it should be possible for someone to earn credit for referring you as a new member, in addition to you earning this bonus.

Comments

  1. I get an error message every time I try to sign up for this promotion, even though I’ve never had a Rakuten account. I enter my e-mail address and then do the Amex login and get “Oops something went wrong” or something to that effect. Any advice? Defective link?

  2. I’ve never had a Rakuten account. I go to the Rakuten/AMEX site and put in my AMEX log in. It sends I’m eligible. But then when I try to join nothing happens. I tried a 2nd browser. Same issue. Any thoughts?
