American Express Platinum Lets You Earn Free Avis Weekend Rentals

File this under ‘I had no idea’ until the folks at Autoslash uncovered it.

Whenever I rent a car I plug my confirmation details into the AutoSlash website and they track the reservation in case they can find something for a lower price. They’ll also do the initial sleuthing for you if you want, since they know all the discounts and coupons out there. They know their rental cars, but I was still surprised by this find since I figured I knew all the benefits of the Platinum Card by American Express.

I mean, I know all about the $200 airline fee credit (that I’ve used to reimburse two $100 American Airlines gift cards each year, even though that’s not how it’s supposed to work), the airline lounge access (Delta lounges when flying Delta, American Express’ own Centurion lounges, and Priority Pass lounges), Hilton and Starwood Gold (which matches to Marriott Gold), and National Car Rental Executive status. Plus of course the card now comes with a monthly Uber credit worth up to $200 per year.

But I’ve never looked at the dedicated Avis website for American Express Platinum cardholders.

Avis will give American Express Platinum cardholders who have two qualifying rentals in the first half of the year a two-day weekend rental certificate. They also have the offer for two qualifying renatls in the second half of the year. You can earn a certificate every six months. Full terms (.pdf).

  • Rent for 2 days or more
  • Book with discount AWD code A756900
  • Pay with the Platinum American Express Card
  • Earn Avis points rather than airline miles/hotel points

The free weekend rentals require a Saturday night (well, that is sort of goes along with a two day weekend) and can only be used in the US including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands — but not Alaska or the New York City metro area and is valid for cars up to full size (so no SUVs, vans, etc).

AutoSlash says that local taxes are charged on the weekend rentals.

Terms and conditions:

Use of the AWD A756900 will provide the customer with a discount of up to 25% off the rental rate, set at Avis’s discretion.

Taxes, surcharges, energy recovery fees, concession recovery fees, vehicle license recovery fees and customer facility charges ($10/contract in CA) may apply and are the responsibility of the customer.

  1. I gave up on Avis last year. National is the place to be as Emerald Club Executive status offered with the AMEX Platinum card. National has a huge selection of top quality cars with low miles at most major airports.

  2. I have been using to get the good rate and have been using budget and AVIS. Has anyone been able to get the 2-day free weekend rental? I rent about 50 time a year. Sometime twice in a week and I like to find out the best way to collect some free rental days. The $20 coupon from Budget is almost useless. You have to book using their regular rate to use it. If I book using, I can’t use it. I do collect some AVIS points.

  3. Hi Gary, is see the Business version isn’t mentioned. Would you happen to know if it gets the same perk? Thanks!

  4. Avis does not honor this deal. I made two qualifying rentals with my AMEX Platinum last October and November and have received no certificate. I have spoken with several persons at Avis – some say that the promotion existed, but is no longer valid. Some were rude, some were merely curt; none wanted to help. I spoke with a supervisor, and then to her supervisor. I got nowhere. I spoke with AMEX, who were uniformly polite and helpful, but said that the offer had to be fulfilled by Avis. I will not patronize Avis or Budget any longer. They offered apologies for the rudeness, but no compensation whatever.
