Late in the week we learned that the Platinum Card by American Express gets new benefits effective March 30th.

  • New metal card design
  • $200 annual Uber credit (parsed out monthly)
  • 5x earning on some hotel bookings
  • Free authorized user Gold cards
  • 2 free guests on Priority Pass lounge visits

Business Platinum Card

This comes after after adding 5 points per dollar earning on airfare. The card’s annual fee will be going up from $450 to $550 a year.

Meanwhile the American Express OPEN Business Platinum recently started letting you select an airline with which to get a 50% rebate when redeeming for travel with pay with points, effectively getting 2 cents per point in value. It also added 1.5 points per dollar on purchases of $5000 or more.

Turns out that there are more new benefits coming for the Business Platinum card.

An American Express spokesperson tells me,

Beginning March 30, 2017, Business Platinum Card Members will get 5X Membership Rewards Points on flights and prepaid hotels at

Business Platinum Card Members also get access to the recently announced new Global Dining Collection, as well as the expanded Global Lounge Collection and the Global By Invitation Only Events.

Business Platinum Card Getting New Benefits March 30th

While I’m unlikely to book prepaid hotels at — those hotel bookings won’t come with elite benefits which undermines the point of Starwood and Hilton Gold status benefits that come with the card! — booking flights shouldn’t undermine airline points-earning or status benefits and could come close to approximating the personal Platinum card’s 5x earning on airfare.

I have several questions out, such as whether the card’s annual fee will change and whether ‘expanded Global Lounge Collection’ means also getting 2 free guests for Priority Pass lounge visits.

  1. This is nice for those of us that are forced to book through Amex Travel for work, and have to use the corporate Amex to run all expenses. Then again, I’m sure the point is to attract new customers rather than just throw out a carrot to get us to comply with our current corporate policies, but I’ll take it.

  2. Does this mean with the 5x on airfare, that the business version will have now parity with the personal version — with the additional business only benefits of the 50% points rebate on airfare and the Gogo passes?

  3. If the business platinum has 5x airfare and 50% points rebate, I’ll dump my personal platinum for this.

  4. @ymx – No Uber credit, if you care about that.

But yes, sounds like the business version is superior. Too bad the AU fee is so high in comparison to the personal Platinum.

  5. Beginning March 30, 2017, Business Platinum Card Members will get 5X Membership Rewards Points on flights and prepaid hotels at

Does this mean that flights have to be booked through Amex to get 5x points? I am hoping there should be a comma after flights. If do need to book through Amex then the PQD and bulk fare issue with negates this benefit for United frequent flyers. If we can use the card to book with the airline then we have a good proposition.

  6. Gary – sounds like there is some ambiguity in the language of what you were told, i.e.: “flights and prepaid hotels at” That could mean flights booked anywhere — or just flights booked at

  7. Yes, Ideally, this promotion wording would just roll over on March 30 to a permanent form:

For a limited time, earn 5X points (that’s 4 additional points per dollar) for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel using your enrolled Card. There’s no limit to the additional points you can earn with this offer.

Enroll in two easy steps and spend by March 29, 2017.

  8. Too bad one of the bennys is Uber. I like a bargain as much as the next guy but I haven’t used Uber since January – corporate actions have consequences.

  9. I know there is a lot of buzz over the new hotel benefit; however, the problem with it is you have to book prepaid rates on a third party site. That means that elite benefits may be limited and you lose out if there are flight delays or other issues so it is not that great of an option. I also notice that hotels will change their prices constantly. I always have to monitor my reservations because the rate generally goes down as it gets closer to my stay. If I prepay I am stuck even if the cost goes down.

  10. I just received the email from Amex about this benefit. Our concerns have been met, and this benefit is only for air bookings through their travel service. I read on other blogs also that the biz card might not get the Uner credit and it is not clear if or what annual subscription change would occur.

  11. Did we resolve Gary’s statement ” booking flights shouldn’t undermine airline points-earning or status benefits and could come close to approximating the personal Platinum card’s 5x earning on airfare.”? Does not seem to hold true for those with Bulk Fare issues.
