EXCLUSIVE: Clarifying March 30 Changes to the American Express Business Platinum

Last night I shared that the American Express Business Platinum card would be adding new benefits on March 30.

We already knew about changes coming to the personal platinum card. But we didn’t know about changes to Business Platinum.

I learned exclusively from American Express that:

Beginning March 30, 2017, Business Platinum Card Members will get 5X Membership Rewards Points on flights and prepaid hotels at amextravel.com.

Business Platinum Card Members also get access to the recently announced new Global Dining Collection, as well as the expanded Global Lounge Collection and the Global By Invitation Only Events.

I’ve since gained several clarifications on what this will mean for Business Platinum cardholders.

  • 5x points earning is only at Amextravel.com. It wasn’t clear to some readers whether “5X Membership Rewards Points on flights and prepaid hotels at amextravel.com” meant that you could earn 5 points per dollar on all flights, or only flights booked at Amextravel.com. American Express clarifies that 5 points per dollar applies to flights booked at amextravel.com and to prepaid hotels booked at amextravel.com.

  • Priority Pass Select will allow 2 complimentary guests.

When Business Platinum Card Members enroll in Priority PassTM Select and visit a lounge, they can bring two accompanying guests for no charge.

  • The annual fee is not going up on the Business Platinum card. [Expired: This information is no longer current, 2/1/19]

  1. 5x flights is good. I was targeted for that a month or so ago so have been benefiting. Prepaid hotels is out of my comfort range so that’s a meh.

  2. @Gary —> You wrote, “With a continued $450 annual fee, and certain benefits that the personal card doesn’t have, some will prefer the Business Platinum.”

Uh, let’s see: $100 cheaper and MORE benefits? Yeah, I’d say that’s right. HOWEVER, how does one get a Business card without owning a business?

  3. @Jason Brandt Lewis, with the business card you won’t get the $200 in total uber credits during a year and you won’t get 5x airfare when buying directly from the iarline. Although of course Business platinum gets annual gogo passes.

I suggest that if you’re going to start a business, before you even do business, one of the first thins you want to do is separate out business from personal finances. and a good way to do that is to get a business credit card, so that your accounting is cleaner from the start. that will help with the IRS in demonstrating you have a bona fide business rather than a hobby. So you don’t need a bunch of business revenue already necessarily to get a business credit card.

Whether or not you’re approved without business revenue already depends on a number of things such as your credit score, total outstanding credit already etc. But plenty of people get business cards when they’re in the formation and planning stage of their business.

  4. Will the 5x stack with 50% rebate on pay with points? The way it shows on the cc statement you get charged and than a reimbursement comes in dollars and than a 50% rebate in points. I am loving the business card!

  5. Will the flights booked through Amex travel get the elite benefits? 5X is good but not that great if I lose my elite status due to not booking directly with the airline.
