Here’s The Latest Southwest Airlines Strategy To Avoid Another Meltdown This Summer

It’s been five months since Southwest Airlines experienced an unprecedented meltdown. They initially blamed weather, but they were cancelling over 60% of their flights a day even while other airlines throughout the country were operating normally. They found themselves short-staffed, and without the systems to recover. Their phone system broke. And they had to rebuild schedules manually, getting in touch with crews one at a time. And this went on for a week.

Now the airline is headed into summer – peak travel – so observers both inside and outside the company are asking whether they’re ready.

Bleeding Frontier Airlines Passenger Lands In Wrong Country By Mistake

A regular Frontier Airlines commuter between Philadelphia and Jacksonville, Florida where she keeps a second home, arrived at the correct gate – but then went to the restroom since the gate agent confirmed she had time.

When she returned “she found the flight almost fully boarded and the jetway door about to close” so everyone was in a rush. Frontier was apparently more interested in policing the size of her carry-on bag than in making sure her boarding pass was for the correct flight. Her flight had had a gate change.

Does It Matter If An Airport’s Management Is Corrupt Or Incompetent?

Some of the most successful airports in the country are also frequently considered to be among the least well run or most corrupt. I’d put the New York area airports (Port Authority of New York New Jersey), Washington Dulles and National Airports (Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority), Atlanta and Detroit in this camp.
