Those Boeing Delays Are Forcing Big Cuts To American Airlines Flying

American Airlines is making changes to its international schedule, and they’re telling employees that it is because they’re having to plan for fewer widebody planes. Boeing delivery delays on the 787-9 aircraft that American has ordered mean they’re not going to be able to support the full schedule they’ve been selling.

As part of these changes, American is also making further adjustments to its network. This includes increasing service on some routes as well – so these changes aren’t entirely Boeing’s fault. Those service adjustments are being bundled in with bigger changes.

American Airlines Launching New Service To New Zealand, Dropping Israel And India Routes

May 27 2022

American Airlines is launching a new long haul Pacific route, Dallas to Auckland, complementing Qantas Dallas – Sydney service. They won’t restart Los Angeles – Auckland, though, and they’re dropping the idea of Dallas – Tel Aviv. The long-expect Seattle – Bangalore flight, which was supposed to be American’s first return to India, won’t happen until (at least) summer 2023 if it comes to fruition.

There are several more route changes as American adjusts its international strategy as well.

Spirit Airlines CEO Ben Baldanza told an interesting story about trying to figure out whether a new route would be profitable.

In normal times airlines have great data – required and reported by the federal government – on a sample of US ticket purchases that show the number of people flying a given route and what price. Dec 18 2020

International route networks are currently very limited, often only flights that can be supported by cargo with passengers a plus are operating. That’s both because of limited travel demand, with business travel non-existent and a raging virus keeping people at home, and because of travel restrictions and local restrictions too (there have to be activities at a destination happening to make the travel worthwhile).

But which routes are going to come back, and which ones are gone for good?

American Airlines Lays Out Brand New International Flight Strategy

Jul 01 2020

On Saturday I told you that a big international route announcement was coming from Americanincluding, quoting internal comments by CEO Doug Parker, “what we plan to fly next summer and what we don’t plan to fly.” That announcement is now out.

They’re revamping their international strategic focus, and bringing back many routes for summer while break-even load factors are so low thanks to the CARES Act. LAX is no longer their Pacific hub. They’re doubling down on close partnerships. And that means a lot of flight changes.

American Airlines Planning International Route Announcement

Jun 28 2020

American Airlines CEO Doug Parker shared with pilots last week that they’re planning an international route announcement in a couple of weeks. The flights they’ll be adding soon have already been shown to pilots, who had to bid on which trips to take. They’re also going to share plans for which flights they’ll run next summer – and which they won’t.

Senior Vice President Vasu Raja then went on to explain how they’re deciding which flights to add, and dropped two that look likely to start back up in August.
