New IHG Rewards Club 5000 Point Discounted Redemptions Coming on Tuesday

PointBreaks will be released on Tuesday for bookings and stays between May 27 and July 31.

There will be more than 150 hotels participating in this round of discounted redemptions.

The short teaser list of properties released so far:

  • Crowne Plaza Hotel Bangkok- Lumpini Park, Thailand
  • Crowne Plaza Johannesburg-The Rosebank, South Africa
  • Hotel Indigo San Jose Forum, Costa Rica
  • Holiday Inn Hotel Laval- Montreal, Canada
  • Holiday Inn Hotel Frankfurt – Airport, Germany
  • Staybridge Suites Guadalajara Expo, Mexico
  • I’m surprised to see only one hotel in Thailand being promoted. Perhaps there will be more, but I see no reason not to include the Intercontinental Koh Samui, Hua Hin, and Bangkok given the current unpleasantness.

The most popular, best value PointBreaks properties — which may cost 40,000 normally and get reduced to just 5000 points — go quickly. So you want to jump on those right away.

Since the reservations are generally cancellable, it’s worth making speculative bookings in case you might need one (and of course cancelling if you don’t within cancel rules).

But IHG has tightened up the ability to go big on speculative bookings.

They now limit you to two reservations per hotel during each PointBreaks period. The idea is to prevent folks from sitting on (or bartering) reservations. A pain for some, will help avoid too many cancellations for participating hotels, and should help others to get in on the deal too.

When a hotel matches your travel plans — and the number participating are limited, the time horizon to book is just a couple of months, and the best ones go quickly — then it’s a fantastic deal. Especially when you consider that you can buy points at just 7/10ths of a cent apiece which makes these award nights just $35.

    1. Gary, with tine limit of two point break reservations, could one possibly book for say five nights, and then prior to the stay curtail it so one would be staying only three consecutive days not five? Or with the permission of the hotel, could one cancel the last two days of a five day stay, at check in?

      Thanks

    2. Lumpini Park was one of the big protest sites in Bangkok that tourists were told to avoid, although I think that it has now been cleared of protesters
