For the past week, my Facebook feed has been full of ice bucket challenges to raise awareness of ALS and funds for the ALS Association.
Somehow I’ve been lucky enough – or inconsequential enough – to escape being called out for an ice bucket challenge.
Enter frequent flyer guru Randy Petersen.
Randy challenged me from a Sheraton. I find myself on the road at a W, sans anything resembling a video camera other than phone and without any editing software.
Nonetheless, and with it given that nearly everything that can be done with an #IceBucketChallenge has already been done, I take my ice bucket and pass on my contribution and my toast on behalf of this disease.
Will the three people I’ve challenged come through?

Didn’t Randy make quite a mess for the hotel staff to clean up??
Come on, Gary. Water and Ice over the head too.
Thanks.
Glad you fixed yourself a drink. How much was the check you wrote to ALS?
It was more than the standard $100.
Uh oh. Filmed this yesterday, posted it this morning, and this afternoon I see I’m not the only one using the ice bucket to pour himself a drink:

At least I’m now in good company! Wasn’t sure how this would go over, but Patrick Stewart agrees with me it seems! 🙂
At least your donation was over $100, but it’s still BORING you refused to get wet… Yaaaaaawn!
You should have nominated Christopher Elliott or John Pistole (head of TSA)…
Are you kidding? So you and a couple others pour yourself a drink and think that is “funny”? Go ahead and have a drink, but do what the the real challenge is. At least Randy went all out and did it properly.
Showed your video to about 20 different people at a party and they all said “what a loser”. Are you “too good” for a little ice and water? Will it ruin your clothes? Does it not fit with your first class lifestyle?
Just lost several more readers.
Not too good by any stretch!! I thought the ice bucket had very much been done, over and over, and the real challenge was to contribute to ALS research. So I thought I’d try to be different, wasn’t sure if it would work, but I would make a bigger than standard gift in the process just to be sure. And I do take some comfort in the fact that Patrick Stewart took the same approach 🙂
So you want us to believe that you came up with or were one of the early people who did the “ice cube-in-a-drink” challenge? And then lo an behold, you found out AFTER that Sir Patrick Stewart did the same…(and you didn’t know about it?)
Come on Gary. Isn’t it too much of a coincidence that both of you are in a hotel room. Both of you are by a desk. Both of you remain pretty much silent? And after you did your thing, THEN you found out that you are in “good company”?
Really? Is that the sequence of events?! It would be better to have said that “I saw Patrick Stewart (and others) do this, and so here’s my go”. Write your cheque and be done with it.
But then you say “…Patrick Stewart agrees with you”. Is that the case or is it “I agree with Patrick Stewart”? There’s a difference. And you sir, are no Patrick Stewart.
@John LHR – I certainly don’t think Patrick Stewart saw/coped me!
Since I did mine, I saw his and also saw Sarah Palin do something similar [pours a soda] but ends with being splashed by water.
Wow, all the haters!
i think the drink approach is perfectly respectable, the donation and furthering the message is what it’s all about.
Wow, a lot of commenters here like to dwell on negativity or find something negative out of something that is supposed to be positive.
Gary, I applaud you for taking the time out of your day to participate in this challenge, being generous enough to go above and beyond the standard donation amount, continuing to further awareness about the ALS Association and more importantly for being true to yourself.
The goal of the campaign is not about pouring ice water over one’s head, but raising funds for research and spreading awareness about the ALS disease. Gary did exactly that, so for the negative nellies, if you don’t have anything positive to say then either keep it to yourself or go pound sand somewhere else.
I agree 100% with Golfingboy. Good on you, Gary!
PStew did it better.
But your drink looked tastier. Assuming that was vodka, not gin….
Of COURSE Patrick Stewart did it better. To borrow a line from Chevy Chase, he’s Patrick Stewart, and I’m not.
Gary,
Liked your challenge, but I am disturbed by Randy Peterson’s video. I don’t get it. Is it funny to pour water all over the carpet of the Sheraton Hotel? The end of his video showed a huge puddle on what looked like a walkway that looked like an inside hall. At least stand in a bathtub, Randy! The whole thing seemed quite rude to me.
I call for a dunk tank at the next FTU!
@Gene I’d be game…
@Gary — I’m in…
