When I was new to miles and points, one of the biggest deals was signing up for and switching long distance carriers. Then there were big mileage offers for cell phone service. Those dried up a bit with number portability, when a company acquired a customer the customer wasn’t really locked in past the end of their contract the way they had been so it wasn’t worth spending as much to acquire a customer.
A dozen years ago I earned 10,000 miles for signing up for Sprint service, Sprint had a cell tower on top of the building next to my office and I got a great signal even in the parking garage.
I haven’t been a Sprint customer, though, since they merged with Nextel and were promoting using your phone as a walkie talkie (which I guess is still a thing).

- 20,000 AAdvantage miles for new Sprint customers, deposited in 8-10 weeks
- Both new and existing customers earn 5004 miles a year for staying Sprint customers, deposited as 417 miles per month.
You can earn rewards with AT&T service, too, of course — a mere 1% rebate via Plenti. But this is more valuable. It’s good for new and for existing customers.
And by taking advantage of this offer, you give up:
- The next best signup offer. For instance, ebates currently offers a $187.50 rebate for new customers.
- Service discounts. Many companies and associations have discounts you can take advantage of shaving several percent off your monthly bill.
So this is best for folks who would otherwise be paying regular price. And of course Sprint has to work for you to take advantage of it, and I don’t think I’d choose a mobile carrier on the basis of miles rather than price or service. But it’s good to see more options for more rewards, especially since there had been a relative drought in this space for quite some time.

Interesting option, but not worth it with the SDP I receive. Taking the points would end up costing me more than $500 extra on my bill a year.
For Sprint offer is says SDP customers not valid for both mileage and discount.

Any word if this would work with a no-contract, prepaid plan? Sign up for 30 days and then cancel? I absolutely do not want Sprint, but I’d gladly activate an old phone and pay for a couple months of service.
Hello! I’d just like to confirm that my 20,000 miles has been credited to my AAdvantage account! .. I opened a new Sprint prepaid account (went into the store) using my own device in early June, they gave me the promo discounted rate for 50% discount (switch to sprint and save) on TMobile’s rate (I ported one line from my MetroPCS account).. So it only took about 6 weeks, and I wasn’t sure if I would get the miles at all, I just had a wait and see attitude. 🙂 — you just have to enter your email in that promo link before you open the account, get that promo code sent to you and make sure the Sprint rep uses that promo code when you start your account. Then after you start the account you need to go to that website and register with your account number.. and it works!
