Luxury Travel Diary, a high-end travel blog with great reviews based in the UK, has a bunch of travel auctions — some about to close, others extend into October — and there look to be some real bargains.

They wanted to highlight some of these, and offered to help organize a giveaway of a 3 night stay in a 3-bedroom luxury apartment in Knightsbridge, London for readers of this blog. Details on how to comment on this post to win below.

Folks who already know about these auctions won’t like the added attention, because frankly there aren’t enough bidders relative to the value of the offerings and some of these items go too cheap.

  1. There are many reasons to select a property like the Ovington apartment over a hotel. For example, I am taking a trip with my mother and two sisters in a couple of months and the four of us would be much more comfortable in an apartment. We would not have to split up into two rooms and would have more space to spread out. Also, I really enjoyed this part of London when I was there in June. Easy access to dining, shopping, parks, and museums.

  23. I’d adore staying at the Ovington in Knightsbridge. I was in London at the age of 14 and fell in love with that city. (Even though a raven at the Tower scared me when he flew at the brass buttons on my jacket.) Many years later, (I’m 53 now) I’d love to go back and live like a local if only for a short time. Hotels are wonderful but I think we can really experience a place when we can be part of the local set. Also, I have a new jacket with brass buttons and those ravens are still there. . .

  353. I would love to stay at THE OVINGTON ELEGANCE because it looks amazing and the location is a perfect spot to explore London.

  357. Why would I choose the Ovington? Because it’s not a hotel, but rather a way to experience London in the best way possible – by staying in an upscale apartment and in the absolute shopping center of London (some would say of the world).

    If I win I will treat my wife and myself a trip to London in First Class (using my BA companion pass) and stay there for 3 days of luxury just to shop. Yes, I know I won’t be able to afford much, maybe lunch at Harrods or tea at Fortnum & Mason’s.

    About 40 years ago we were once offered a night at a very fancy Mayfair apartment owned by some friends of my in-laws and the doorman didn’t want to let us in until he had verified with the owners (despite our having keys) – and then he hung around outside the apartment door for a couple of hours (making sure we weren’t going to slip off with a van Gogh or something).

I’ve participated in a few LTD auctions — It’s indeed important to pay attention to the details (date of expiry, blackout periods, and such) as well as to the prospective total cost of the trip (e.g., don’t submit a winning bid for a villa in the Maldives if you aren’t prepared to pay for two RT airfares with money or miles). And, not surprisingly, the bids tend to shoot up closer to true market value as the auction window closes. Still, there are indeed some very attractive offers to be found, and it all makes for a fun read in any event.

I’d select the Ovington Elegance because, as a father of a child with a serious food allergy, it would be much safer to cook our own food on vacation than eat out and risk restaurant errors three times a day.
