New and notes from around the interweb:
- Year-over-year traffic at Reykjavik airport was down 28% in June with the demise of super cheap fares from Wow Air. Demand curves slope downward.
- Aer Lingus passengers left on plane for three hours with no air conditioning in 100 degree heat in Lyon, France. Eventually the flight was cancelled, passengers overnighted, and their flight the next morning was… cancelled too.
- “It takes a unicorn therapy dog to become an airport therapy dog because of the large crowds”
- The very ‘meh’ new Apple Card will launch in August.
- The TWA pilot who flew a secret mission to recover a hijacked plane
- There’s a new best-ever offer for the Amtrak Mastercard of 40,000 points and a $100 statement credit after $2500 spend within 90 days. (HT: Doctor of Credit) Amtrak made the move to revenue-based redemptions four years ago, making this offer predictably worth at least $1000 in train travel.
- Survey: 1 in 4 delivery drivers say they’ve tasted food before dropping it off
- Two Miami TSA employees placed on leave after setting up racist display of monkeys and a noose
@ Gary — Re MIA, wow, just wow.
I remember flying with TWA Capt Testrake. My FA pointed it out.

I follow the news and remember that every incident involving a noose has been proven a hoax. Google it yourself if you don’t believe me. I can’t believe that an organization as incompetent as the TSA could find the truth in an incident as racially charged as this. I also realize that many people will swallow this story hook line and sinker. Again, every single story involving a noose has been proven to be false. This will be too.
From the food delivery article: “21 percent complained that customers expected them to climb many stairs and take elevators to bring the food straight to their doors.”
Ummm….your job is to deliver food, not the mail. What do you expect?
DHS’s idea of accountability for doing inappropriate things on the job: give the employee paid time off, while saying the employee is “suspended”.
Paid bonus vacation for bad behavior. At the TSA and at CBP.
Re: MIA Noose, I had to Google to see why a noose and/or monkeys are racist.
Growing up in a country village in Thailand I used to use different kinds of knots and nooses to trap animals all the times to get food.
Nowadays, there are many things that made me like “huh?” when I’m told it’s considered racist. And most of the times it’s racist in the American context which bears little or no resemblance in other cultures.
One “racist” thing that happened near where I live now (Victoria, Australia) that sparked discussions among the people in our community. The State Naming Council (or something like that) decided to de-name a hill called “Jim Crow Hill” because it was “racist.”
When asked how the name was racist, they responded that Jim Crow is a racist name in America, hence, inappropriate here too.
People were like “What da? What has things in America got to do with us here?” This is an example of “PC-gone- too-far.” Here, Jim Crow was the name of a guy who owned that hill like a hundred years ago and people have been calling it Jim Crow Hill for generations.
I gladly steer clear of things like food delivery, ride sharing, and house sharing services.
As for the Apple Card…they should make a really sweet looking metal card with the apple logo cut into it, somehow incorporate the bank name and leave it at that! You’d think this could be a success even with poor card benefits, just from making it look sleek and cool.
