News and notes from around the interweb:
- A court has ordered Qatar Airways to pay for psychotherapy for the plus-sized model refused transportation because she was too big for coach.
- WSJ covers modern mileage running it doesn’t make as much sense as it once did, but it still makes sense for some, largely for elite status when you’re close and going to be traveling more in the coming year than the last one. (It looks a lot different now with American than United.)
Most mileage runs, though, turn out better than this.
- Boosie on Getting Accused of Flying Spirit: “I’ve Never Flown Spirit in My Life!”
- The new joint American Airlines-British Airways lounges at New York JFK offer kosher meals on request
- Earn enough points for a free domestic flight in Vietnam, just by logging into your frequent flyer account each day
- Washington DC will vote on increasing tourism tax in order to increase tourism it seems like they have backwards how this works. The argument is by giving their tourism promotion bureaucrats an additional slush fund out of hotel taxes that money will be well-spent bringing in more tourism (and that this will outweigh tourism lost from higher taxes). Of course if this were a high enough priority they’d invest out of additional funds. Instead they’re effectively saying this is literally a lower priority than everything else already being funded, but still worth taxing out of towners more for.
- A new pilot contract will do nothing for passengers in crowded gate areas at government-owned airports.
Pilots and passengers face lots of delays on American Airlines. It’s a different scene for American executives at their Skyview headquarters.

Even worse than a mileage run is a segment run. I needed 21 segments and about $1000. A 5 segment flight on one day was the worst, not because of the time, but because of all of the late flights and tight connections. It was stressful, with a good amount of running, usually to find that the plane had just arrived. But, they were all domestic flights, so I didn’t need to bring a passport.
‘A court has ordered Qatar Airways to pay for psychotherapy for the plus-sized model refused transportation because she was too big for coach.’
What if she’s too big for the couch?
John H, if AA is your airline, starting next year, AA is eliminating the segment requirement for its milestone benefits.
“Washington DC will vote on increasing tourism tax in order to increase tourism”
That’s why I always stay on VA side when I go there. All my visitor $ stays in VA.
Also, message to DC people: Stop complaining about taxation without representation! If you want to be represented, easy, move to VA or MD and you’ll be represented! You choose to live in DC, nobody is forcing you to live in DC!
Couldn’t help but wonder if your title was inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan, but I’m no Major General.
“ Also, message to DC people: Stop complaining about taxation without representation! If you want to be represented, easy, move to VA or MD and you’ll be represented! You choose to live in DC, nobody is forcing you to live in DC!”
Really?
You’re ok with 700,00 people not being allowed representation?
(I live in MN so have no skin in the game)
What does status give you anymore?
I mainly fly Delta so maybe this is only Delta. But every flight seems half filled with Diamonds.
We gave up and now just buy first.
In fact tomorrow I’m flying American for the first time in years because their first class flight was far cheaper than delta.
I paid the dollars for Platinum but don’t have the miles so am gold.
Decided I don’t care cause I think my unused miles over Gold will roll over next year. And I di t really get anything for status anymore anyway
US airline frequent flier perks ain’t what they used to be. Teleconferencing has replaced lots of the business travel that builds up those miles. Maybe airlines and customers will go back to a market approach emphasizing up front costs over gimmicks
