The High-Flying Baker: How a Ryanair Flight Attendant Baked a Cake Mid-Air!

Flight attendants are miracle workers making the best of whatever hand they’re dealt (usually a 2-7 off suit). Airlines put them in jams, don’t book their lodging when they’re forced to pick up an expected sequence, and don’t give them time to eat between flights.

But one cabin crew member goes far above ordinary in the galley of his aircraft, actually baking a cake from scratch. Is it somebody’s birthday?

Several airlines have offered programs to provide passengers with cakes on board for special occasions.

This is a Ryanair flight attendant. They’re the ultimate in ultra low cost airlines. That makes the feat even more impressive. On board an Airbus A380 the galleys are much larger and the supplies at a crew member’s disposal are more vast. On Ryanair? Surely an opportunity to monetize fresh baked cakes!

Flight attendants are really resourceful, especially when it comes to food. For instance they’ve been known to make grilled cheese in their hotel room with an iron. Someone once claimed to have cooked chicken, with butter and garlic, using their hotel room’s coffee maker. I assumed that was parody, and there’s a photo but no video.

  1. I recall in 2005 that an AS FA cooked up the halibut I had caught earlier that day. I was on the 41 mile Gustavus-Juneau route and she set it up in the 737 convection oven during boarding and it was done and delicious upon arrival.

That was (as AS said then) “North of Expected”.

  3. Surprised RyanAir has ovens in their planes. They are so focused on cost, I figurerd the company would either not oder them or rip then out. southwest, frontier, and spirit dont have ovens in their planes.
