  1. It seems like US Airlines have a glut of miles that they issued from non-flying (credit cards, shopping portals) and they are looking for ways to get that liability out of the picture.

    Meanwhile, I believe airlines in the the rest of the world mostly issue their miles from flying or having the customer purchase them at lousy rates.

    This may start a decoupling from US-based airlines and everyone else where they’re part of an alliance, but partner award flights become severely limited.

  2. SFO airport *is* in the City and County of San Francisco, which owns all the underlying land.

    It’s not physically attached to the rest of it’s land, similarity to e.g. Point Roberts, which is in the USA even if to drive there you need to go through Canada.

  3. SFO is not in the city nor the county of San Francisco. It is in an unincorporated area of San Mateo County (San Mateo County is the county south of San Francisco.) The City and County of San Francisco owns the land and has resisted any attempt to incorporate it into one of the nearby cities. San Francisco City and County does not have a strip of land under the San Francisco Bay attaching the airport property to to it. It is not unusual for cities to own land outside of their incorporated area. A common reason for doing so is to own a watershed so as to transport the fresh water to the city.
