News and notes from around the interweb:
- You can request a free paper copy of the final issues of United’s Hemispheres magazine which is being discontinued in print. (HT: Live and Let’s Fly)
- An air traffic controller was found asleep under a blanket mid-shift. I’d expect this in Beirut, to be honest, before Brisbane.
A Brisbane Centre air traffic controller who was found asleep at their workstation towards the end of their shift had worked multiple consecutive night shifts resulting in sleep debt, an ATSB investigation report details.

- Samantha Fox has been ordered to pay £1,718 in compensation to British Airways in addition to a £1,000 fine and community service for a December 3 incident on board a London Heathrow to Hamburg flight that diverted back to London after an intoxicated event in which she headbutted the seat in front of her and police were called – she threatened the officer “I know where you live, I’ll knock your teeth out.”
- Interesting data on trends in each major airline’s costs and their on-time performance.
- Last summer someone spent $200,000 to project offensive messages on the Hilton Las Vegas. It is now the subject of a $2 million lawsuit.

In addition to enforced “No Fly Lists” , all passengers ought to be able to produce a “Real ID” or “Passport” with verified identity ; pass through an “Odor Detection Machine” , to stop the foul-smelling ; and stop all non bona-fide service dogs , including to stop the phony emotional support dogs .
You overwork an air traffic controller and the controller will have to find a way to get some needed sleep. The good thing is that by getting sleep, the controller will likely be more alert for the next shift. If the controller was sitting at the console groggy and not getting sleep, that person would only be worse on the next shift. The people doing the scheduling need to be retrained as well as the bosses. Possibly a bunkroom needs to be added. If too few rested ATCs are available, consider shutting down the airspace.
Hmmm… Hey @Alert, I’m with you on the National Database for Registered Service Animals, but the ID part is a head-scratcher: As it is now, all passengers must produce ID, either Driver’s License or Passport. It’s true that some State ID’s don’t have “Real ID” implemented yet, but that’s on those states and not TSA. As for body odor, I’ve traveled to parts of the world where anti-perspirant/deoderant is not preferred, and I’ll agree that it’s unpleasant. That said, I think that crosses a line if those folks are refused the personal freedom to travel.
Naughty girls need love toooo!
@Alert: Following the odor detection machine, anyone who fails should be offered to purchase a stick of deodorant at 5x normal price from a kiosk with the option to tip the kiosk.
In the US, many people don’t know Samantha Fox. She was a mid-1980’s topless model (but not porn star) who had a slightly to moderately successful singing career. She is not tall. She came out as a lesbian roughly in 2005.
Your link to complimentary copy of Hemispheres magazine’s last issue worked (Live and Let’s Fly’s link didn’t work).
But I am still confused. I RSVP’ed and it said “purchased” but no info given as to when/whether it will be mailed to me. And it never asked for my address.
@Allan W – my confirmation said it would be sent around 9/25 to the address on my MileagePlus account.
