News and notes from around the interweb:
- At Southwest Airlines, company bonuses for 2025 (paid in 2026) will still be based on ESG and inclusion metrics.
- Airbnb is distancing itself from co-fonder and board member Joe Gebbia over Gebbia’s support for President Trump and participation in DOGE. (Skift) Gebbia controls 21% of voting shares in Airbnb, while CEO Brian Chesky pledged $100 million to the Obama Foundation.
I have a confession to make:
I did a bad thing.
Something the younger me
Would hate myself for doing.
Something that only a few people (and maybe Bytedance) know:
I voted Republican last November.
I know, I know
I can hear the crush of disappointed voices: Say it ain’t so,…

- Waymo is now live in the Uber app in Austin, albeit with a limited 3.7 square mile service area. Atlanta coming next.
Austin is the first market where Uber will manage and dispatch a fleet of Waymo vehicles. Riders in Phoenix can book Waymo rides through the Uber app, but the ride-sharing company does not manage the Waymo fleet in that market. The two companies’ partnership will expand to Atlanta later this year, where Waymo employees have already begun taking fully autonomous trips across the city, the company said Tuesday.
Waymo in Austin - The fiddling flight attendant of United Airlines – something you’d usually expect to see only on Southwest.

Headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It’s 2025. You-know-who is on an anti-woke tirade. The airline is crumbling while Elliott Management scraps it for parts. It’s getting rid of everything that made it unique (assigning seats, charging for bags, devaluing its points, etc.) Ending training sites for crews (FLL, AUS). All that. Yet they KEEP Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. Wut. Might as well paint ‘DEI’ on the livery. I’m not against either philosophy, personally, but it’s an odd strategy for them. Maybe they want the airline to fail.
On JetBlue’s new Super Mario livery: Nice to see Luigi on there. No particular reason. Cool dude.
Totally unrelated, the Airbnb billionaire a-hole Gebbia’s support for DOGE is understandable, because of his status as a tech-bro-ligarch, but that does not make what Elon is doing ‘good’ if all he has done is fire civil servants, halt all foreign aide (except to Israel), and generally dismantle the government, all so billionaires can get tax cuts. No one is for ‘corruption’ or ‘waste, fraud, and abuse,’ yet these billionaires aren’t actually solving the problems–they’re just distracting and pocketing the money for themselves. If Bernie isn’t happy, then you know it isn’t actually helping ‘the people.’
I guess any “turbulence” will be blamed on Mario hitting his head on something.
ESG as the company layoffs workers. Another data point that ESG is trash, always has been and always will be.
Another stupid “woke” corporation. Trump eventually will get to it….
@George N Romey — No. That is the wrong take, sir. ESG is not ‘trash.’ It’s just an odd policy to keep while the airline undergoes all the other changes (likely brought on by Elliott), given the greater societal and political realities. Again, Texas (and the White House) is openly hostile to that ideology. But that does not it ‘bad’–rather, ESG outperformance is compelling (at least through 2024). However, where things go from here is anyone’s guess–I certainly don’t think trade wars with allies are going to help with inflation. If anything, I’d say you ‘team’ has the worst strategy for us all.
@sam — That doesn’t make any sense (not even ‘common sense’ as your guy likes to pretend). Sure, the ‘culture war’ nonsense motivates dumb-dumbs at campaign rallies, but it means practically nothing for us in the real world–inflation, affordability, healthcare, housing, etc. still need fixing.
SWA is a big business like any other, ‘deep in the heart of Texas,’ so hardly ‘woke’ at all. What matters is that the workers and passengers are getting screwed with layoffs and devaluations, while the oligarchs pocket assets on the cheap. I doubt any of us here are billionaires, so why are any of us carrying water for them?
The anti-DEI rednecks that used to be Southwest’s bread and butter are not the focus anymore. They want people with money, willing to pay more for things.
The low income sector has largely moved onto Spirit or Frontier, leaving WN in the middle with no identity. They’re not cheap enough to be sought after by price sensitive deplorables. They’re not amenity-rich enough to cater to higher affluence clients.
Elliott is the DOGE of Southwest. They’re doing the needful to make Southwest great again.
Mario is an immigrant from Italy, probably illegal and probably a murderer, rapist and member of the Mafia or some cartel.
We want him out of the United States. No more fentanyl!!
I can’t help wondering how many of the people who post on this site ever recognize the contradictions and hypocrisy clearly evident in their words. My guess? Very few of them.
@1990 – You seem to have convinced yourself that Dallas is somehow in lockstep with non-urban Texas as some sort of conservative bastion. In fact, 65% of Dallasites voted for Biden in the most recent election. Over half of the current residents in Dallas County weren’t born in Texas. And ALL major cities in Texas are solid blue. Rural Texas is simply massive enough to keep the state politically conservative in aggregate… for now.
@Uncle Jeff — Preach. Nice use of ‘deplorables.’ And quite appropriate analogy with Elliott as DOGE. If only those ‘rednecks’ (as you called them) could realize that their savior is not saving them–he’s saving himself and the global kleptocracy.
@Mike P — Bah! Look at this good timing! You are the exact person I was thinking of (above). If only you’d realize that you’re getting screwed here (just like the rest of us).
@Ricardo — Mmm. I love me some good satire. Niiice.
Mike P — I know you like ‘famous’ quotes on here. You a fan of Tennessee Williams, the American playwright (you know, A Streetcar Named Desire)? They say that he said: “The only thing worse than a liar is a liar that’s also a hypocrite!” Sounds more like you than most of us, sir.
Of course, you are not one of the few that “get it”. Your contradictions and hypocrisy shine brightly.
@Mike P — Please, be more specific, sir. Which alleged ‘contradiction’ or ‘hypocrisy’ offended you? Please, address one, so we can analyze together. It would be our honor, professor.
Also, we thirst for yet another of your esteemed quotes, my liege. Who will you pull from today? Socrates? Aristotle? Homer? We await your great wisdom! Don’t hold back!!
Another misleading title by Gary the self proclaimed leader of thought. They are devaluating points. But reducing earning rates. Not sure whether Gary knows this difference or does, and is misleading us
I can give you one simple example. You’re constantly expressing your support for free speech while at the same time, you never miss an opportunity to display your affection for unions. And let’s be clear, we’re talking about the structure of unions prevalent in this country and basically, throughout most of the developed world.
I contend that you don’t recognize the obvious hypocrisy.
@Mike P — That’s an unfortunate misinterpretation. It is consistent to support both free speech and unions. At their best, unions amplify the speech of their members, more so than any typical individual worker on their own in contract negotiations. Of course, there are always outliers–some unions, and their leadership in-particular, should do much better.
On the ‘money as speech’ front, yes, there is US Supreme Court precedent that in the public sector, unions can force non-union public employees to pay dues. However, you likely already know that this court is 6-3, solidly pro-business, so you may get your wish and such precedent could be overturned. If the court were to ‘abolish’ all unions and to make all workers ‘at will’ nationwide, I’m sure that would bring you joy, even if most of us lose rights and protections.
Now, come on, give me a decent quote. Frederick Douglas? Hemingway? I’ll go again: “History is a set of lies agreed upon” –Napoleon. You know, the Emperor of the French!
I was right, you missed it. Care to try again?
@Mike P — ‘I accept your surrender.’ Honestly, that’s my favorite quote of yours. I know it’s meaningless, but it sure is fun.
Your previous response demonstrates that you’re what I refer to as a “surface thinker”. You don’t dig down and view the problem at its root. You limit your argument to free speech when, in fact, the two issues revolve around First Amendment rights.
Since you are an ardent supporter of free speech, which is laudable, then to remain consistent, you would also need to support other aspects of the First Amendment, which would include freedom of association.
By their very nature, unions – as they are regulated in this country – deny both employees and the employer their right of freedom of association. Therefore, when you support free speech but fail to support the right of freedom of association, you have a contradiction that is difficult to ignore.
