Amazon Payments went after paypal, and they will let you send $1000 to someone via credit card each month with no fee.
Now Google Wallet has also entered the space, and they’re waiving credit card processing fees as well.
Google Wallet lets you send money to someone’s gmail account. They’re still in ‘beta’ or at least I haven’t heard that they’ve come out of it, and are limiting signups. But anyone who gets sent money automatically gets to join (even if they are sent only a penny).
Unlike Amazon Payments, they started off not capping you at $1000 a month fee-free for credit card transactions.
Roughly speaking it seemed transactions under $1000 process instantly, larger transactions took a few days.
But there has always been a limit, as reader A.A. points out to me with the screen shot below:
Apparently they’ll have to ‘break up’ that transaction just a little bit if they want Google Wallet to process it for them!
Update: This post wasn’t meant as a ‘how to’ on “manufactured spend” it was meant as an amusing, light post. I enjoyed getting the screen shot I posted above. To answer questions from the comments, the current limit is $250 for free.
Very nice tip… Any experience on whether it appears as a purchase or cash advance?
Where is the screen shot? I don’t see it.
@mcdullhk88 It appears as a purchase, not a cash advance
Still want to try out Google wallet. If anyone wants to send me a penny, I’d appreciate it. Have you heard of many people getting shut down or getting their hand slapped for sending too much money on a regular basis? I’m sure it’ll start happening.
News flash: GW wallet is dead. This post is about 3 weeks late.
Google wallet is dead. They are putting fees on all money sent now.
Not three weeks late. More like a day.
How recent is that screenshot? Just in the past few minutes I logged in for my latest round of volleyball and am being charged 2.9%. I found this message:
“No credit or debit card fees for your first $250.00!*
After $250.00 (cumulative), there will be a 2.9% fee, with a minimum fee of $0.30. Remember, sending money from a bank account is always free.
*Promotional period ends June 30, 2013.”
Did this just change? I was just getting warmed up!
I tried sending $500 and they wanted a fee.. Its over
This post was pre-scheduled. I’ve updated it with an explanation of current limits.
Oh well, I got my minimum spend done for this AOR round, and we all knew it would end eventually. I guess it would have been nice to crank out UR points for free forever but I wasn’t really expecting that.
Appears this limit kicked in just today for me. Fee free this morning, no more now.
Sent $750 a couple hours ago without the fee. Oh well, fun while it lasted — got in $2,250 in a week.
In other news, I’ve bought $4,000 VRs in 4 days! I love manufactured spending. I’ll miss it when it’s gone!
