Up to $1250 in Free Lyft Rides in 24 Cities Through May 8

I’ve written mostly about Uber, the on-demand car service app, starting nearly two years ago with Why Taxis Suck and What You Can Do About It.

Uber offers several levels of service — from blacks cars and SUVs to a model where individuals with their own cars will pick you up and take you where you want to go (for less).

In that space they have several competitors like Lyft and Sidecar which I’ve written about less, having used them less.

But Lyft just expanded significantly yesterday. And they’ve got a compelling offer to promote their growth.

Second, in the 24 new cities they’ve launched service they are offering ‘unlimited free rides’ through May 8. I believe it’s not actually unlimited, but rather each person is limited to 50 free rides up to $25 each and only in the cities with new service.

For those of you more used to Uber, with Lyft you ride in the front seat. And the traditional greeting from your driver is a fist bump.

  1. While intriguing, unless they’ve changed something, there is no way to set up an account except through Facebook. I simply won’t use apps that depend on Facebook because that is a sure way to spam your friends and put your FB account at higher risk. Would love be wrong about this, and if there is a way to set up an account without FB that would be great.

  2. I just signed up yesterday. I live in Atlanta, but will be in N Jersey next week. Wondering whether they’ll let me use free rides while there, even though just visiting?

  3. Totally agree with the first person who posted. Why only allow setting up an account through Facebook? There’s no way I’m ever signing up for Lyft then. Their competitor, Uber, doesn’t do that. You can sign up simply via email. Lyft — get with the program. Don’t just allow one method for sign up. That makes no sense if you’re trying to expand your client base. Duh.

  5. mogon & Laura – it’s to help with identity verification and so the driver knows who to look for when picking you up. I was hesitant too, but haven’t been spammed because of it.
