Via the MilesLink newsletter, Air Canada’s Aeroplan is ending 500 mile minimums for mileage earning on short flights, going to a 250 mile minimum, effective August 1.
And of course, since actually flying Air Canada on discount fares doesn’t offer full mileage earning, flying a ‘Tango fare’ on a flight less than 250 miles will only earn 63 miles (25% of 250 minimum). Ouch. Try crediting that flight to british midland instead for 600 mile minimums.
Aeroplan’s impending gutting of their award chart isn’t the only negative change on the horizon…
Looks like they updated their landing page after we posted this last week as there were no explanations on the number of miles earned. We posed the question if the actual earning would be 62.5 miles (eg 63 miles) for Tango fares and it does appear to be that way.
Maybe they will round down to 62? 😉

So, we move ever closer to the day when airlines will actually eliminate miles from flying altogether and focus wholly on credit cards! The situation was already getting crazy … BA will give you 100k for getting a credit card, which would take 200 economy European flights to achieve. And that is an improvement on last year, when it would have taken 800 European economy flights at 125 miles per segment to match 1 credit card application.
On the Tango flight segments within Canada and the United States which earn 25% non-status miles, you will not earn miles in Air Canada’s Star Alliance airline partner programs.
