New legislation would list Alaska’s historic Governor’s Mansion on Airbnb. Republican Representative Will Stapp filed a bill to make it available whenever the legislature is not actively in session, and the governor has not reserved the property in advance with the governor’s office establishing how the property could be rented along with pricing.

The unusual proposal quickly garnered attention—especially after Stapp was spotted on a catwalk outside the House chamber exuberantly chanting “Airbnb! Airbnb!” with both fists raised, underscoring his enthusiasm for the idea.
The historic 14,400-square-foot, three-story, colonial-style home costs $800,000 a year to operate with a full-time staff of four – house manager, private chef, and two housekeepers – and the governor’s public schedule shows he’s used it just 13 nights in the first two months of 2025. The property, which has 10 bathrooms, eight fireplaces, a ballroom, was built in 1912 for $40,000 using federal dollars.
Inside is a functional Hardman piano, original Alaska Native baskets and carvings, and portraits of historical significance such as Secretary of State William Henry Seward who negotiated Alaska’s purchase from Russia in 1867 and a six-foot Peter the Great which was relocated from Sitka’s Baranof Castle following Russia’s sale to the U.S.

It would be an epic place for weddings and parties (to the extent that such comply with short-term rental platform rules) and as Instagram influencers stays. Other state-owned properties could be rented out as well. However critics like Senate President Gary Stevens consider the idea “pretty silly,” and not worthy of prioritizing.
Governor Dunleavy would have to sign the bill even if the legislature passes it – though a two-thirds majority could override a governor’s veto.

So, can you see Russia from this house?
(I know… she didn’t literally say that… it was SNL)
@ Gary — Next Freddie’s location!
I like this idea! Great for celebrations plus keeping the paid staff useful. Of course it wouldn’t work in every state but if not occupied, why not. Hey the white house allows high dollar donors to use the Lincoln bedroom. I suppose musk might be the seasonal resident now.
So the Gov doesn’t live there?
One of Sarah Palin’s talking points when she ran for Vice President was that, as Governor, she put the state helicopter on eBay.
Really cool idea! Could be epic indeed. Wonder why AirBnb though and not just list it themselves.
I’d be VERY worried about potential damage to, or theft of, the priceless historic artifacts.
I’m thinking the “full-time” staff of four aren’t really into this idea.
Could be a historic twist to ‘Sewards Folly’ in the making !
@Maryland :
I think ‘Musk-ovite’ can be more accurately characterized as a squatter !….
