American Airlines Dissed Two Prime Ministers, And Media Is Crying Racism [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Citi ThankYou Rewards is offering a 30% bonus on points transferred to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club through March 18, 2023.

  • To save on travel, it’s worth investigating the benefits offered from retail brands and credit services

  • Why Delta Is Investing In SkyMiles Loyalty Marketing For The First Time Ad Age is not correct that “it wasn’t until today that the airline began putting significant marketing behind” its loyalty program, they actually advertised during the Super Bowl that their original program’s miles would never expire … until adoption expiring miles, before eliminating mileage expiration again.

  • Is Russia loosening rules over use of grey market and cannibalized aircraft parts making its aviation industry unsafe? (HT: @SuperKatie2012)

  • Outrage as American Airlines required two Prime Ministers to check in at the ticket counter for their flight just like all other passengers and it’s being decried as racism. Ok then.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana stated that this is not the first time American Airlines has acted in such a manner, and the carrier had been asked formally to provide proper treatment to government officials in the past. Despite this, the airline refused to acquiesce to the ministry’s request, insisting that the prime ministers leave the lounge and present themselves at the check-in counter.

  • Cultural differences.

  • A whole lot of regional jets without functional internet but I’m grateful for the huge growth in air service in my home town since the start of the pandemic.

  1. Media, as in VFTW?

Normal protocol for host-country’s recognized heads of state and government — whether foreign or domestic — is that check-in formalities can and should be handled by staff without the airline requiring in-person check-in with the check-in agents in the public area. It’s not only a formal courtesy issue; it’s also a security and national pride issue, whereby no hosting country wants to see an assault — murderous or otherwise — happen to visiting foreign heads of state/government because of foreign airline or foreign government intransigence.

Does AA at this Guyanese airport have security contractors hassling people, in the name of “security” with questions?

  2. Who do these two folks think they are, the “Prince & Princess of Canada” (South Park). What a crock of crap! Anytime someone feels dissed by any company or person, they pull out the race card. BOO FREAKING HOO! American doesn’t need to apologize. Just go to the counter and check in. Suck it up and move on you bunch of wusses.

  3. Politicians are not gods. They are public servants. Send them to the back of the bus after the people they serve have boarded. And for the “woke mobsters” I hate to pop your bubble but not every single issue on this planet is based on race, as hard as that may be for your feeble mind to comprehend.

  4. I remember when I was a child in some Latin American airports there was a Diplomatic lounge especially for cases like this. They handled departures and arrivals including luggage. I agree that a head of State who has diplomatic immunity should not be standing in line at check in.

  5. The issue here is how these always self- entitled governmental officials are handled. Nothing to do with racism and “social justice” press would be better focused and concerned about why they are being given special treatment at the expense of the normal passengers.

  6. One man’s take on politicians. They’re simply not that special. In fact, I have nothing but contempt for them.

“The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can’t get and to promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten that promise is worth nothing.” H.L. Mencken

  7. Richard, you are correct. The website from which Gary sourced the story is a troll site. It is a right-wing extremist site seeking to sow discontent. Click, click, click.

  8. James N, it is WE who are actually the problem . . . not the politicians. In spite of Congress having a low approval rating, WE reelect roughly 90 or so percent of incumbent members of Congress (who are seeking reelection) by a 55 to 45 margin. Those involved in the machinery of politics will tell you that the average voter is a lemming who only cares about jersey color – AKA tribalism. (Seneca and Adam Smith were right.)

  9. @Lee
“right-wing extremist site” that means its actually telling the truth right-wing = truth.
