There are a number of different ways of claiming to be the biggest airline. There’s the most seats departing each day, the most flights and the most seat miles (number of potential passengers over miles flown).

American Airlines has focused its operation on the Sun Belt, and while it flies heavily in the summer to Europe it’s primarily a domestic airline. United Airlines doesn’t have as many flights, and a smaller domestic operation, but its planes circumnavigate the globe. They’re bigger planes, with more seats, producing more seat miles.

Southwest Airlines is entirely domestic and close-in international. They fly only Boeing 737s and don’t have regional airline partners they’ve outsourced flying to.

To answer ‘who’s the biggest on the Fourth of July’ we’re mostly asking who carries passengers from the most places domestically to the most places domestically, and looking at most flights, even with smaller planes and fewer seats, makes sense. That’s how American Airlines claims to be 30% bigger than Delta for July 4th holiday travel, running June 27 through July 7.

American expects 7.2 million passengers over nearly 70,000 flights for the holidays – up 8% over 2023- and peaking on Sunday, July 7. This will be the biggest day for travel this summer, when American has scheduled 6,534 flights. Over 6,350 flights are scheduled at the front end of the holiday on June 27 and 28 as well.

On April 18, 1775 Paul Revere rode through what;s now Somerville, Medford, and Arlington, Massachusetts to warn that British troops were enroute and that they sought to capture Sam Adams and John Hancock of the regulars’ movements later that night would be the capture of Adams and Hancock.

Today you can fly Philadelphia – Boston roundtrip each afternoon on American flight AA1776. Sadly they no longer offer Sam Adams beer on board.

It’s almost de rigueur to caveat any mention of Columbus with a criticism. Of course saying that Columbus ‘discovered’ America would certainly have seemed odd to the people already living here at the time.

My freshman year of college there was a funeral march on campus to commemorate Columbus Day. One of my friends stood along the march as a counter protester, holding up a sign which simply read “Western Civilization is Good.” Without taking sides in any debate over Columbus, that most American of airlines does of course fly there (and indeed, Columbus was once a hub for America West).
