Beyond Supersonic, Elon Musk’s One Hour Transpacific Flights [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Mexico’s navy will take over airport security in 7 locations including Cancun and Cozumel an anti-corruption move

  • Elon Musk hints at one hour flights from Texas to Singapore the thing I’ve come to appreciate about Elon Musk is his reality distortion field, a term first attributed to Steve Jobs.

Musk thinks big. Much of what he says doesn’t come to fruition in any reasonable timeframe. But he reimagines what is possible and some of the things that seem crazy he does will into existence. If I were betting on him statement-by-statement or tweet-by-tweet I’d bet against, but he’ll still wind up creating more than almost anyone.

He’s 50 years old, the wealthiest person in the world on any given day, and he’s at least partly responsible for Paypal, Tesla, SpaceX (including StarLink) and The Boring Company … and that was all after selling his first company for $307 million. But he probably won’t actually launch people on ICBMs to Singapore.

  1. But by definition, Starship is not a ballistic missile — although I agree, it will take many thousands of safe landings before significant numbers want to fly on one (regardless of the price). Freight may be a different matter though, particularly for the military.

Plus, gotta give Musk credit — he’s not just a dreamer or talker. He has completely revitalized and reimagined the space industry — with government agencies, foreign governments, and the military industrial complex largely working against him. Similarly, does anyone think electric vehicles today would be where they are if it weren’t for Tesla giving a shock (no pun intended) to the auto industry?

  2. The regulatory, air traffic control, and physical infrastructure aspects are nowhere near ready for suborbital point to point transportation using Starship. Cargo or passenger. Elon will be living on Mars long before that becomes anything close to reality.

  3. KoggerJ, just curious, what’s the connection between rich people attending the Super Bowl and individuals pushing the “climate change” hysteria?
