News and notes from around the interweb:
- A Holiday Inn Express was robbed for the second time in two weeks. There were multiple shooters at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, Michgian. And there was A shooting at the Homewood Suites in Salina, New York. Finally breaking with the theme of recent crime sprees at limited service hotels, a man was shot and wounded at the Intercontinental Buckhead in Atlanta. What is with the hotel violent crime sprees the past few weeks?
- Washington National becomes first US airport with bikeshare. There’s no truth to the rumor that American Eagle passengers will have to bike out to gate 35X remote stands.
- Southwest Cardholders: Register To Get 500 Points Each Month You Have 1,000 Credit Card Points Earnings
- Etihad Guest devaluation for own-metal awards.
- 20 Thai Airways officials investigated for corruption
- The illegal blockade of Qatar in place since 2017 led by the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia, could soon be resolved. This will shorten Qatar Airways flights, because they won’t have to avoid nearly all airspace around the country any longer.
Gary, I think it’s the luck of the draw that these events are happening at the hotels. My guess is that it is Covid related; there are so many people who are financially desperate right now, that any place is a target. Honestly, I am surprised that it took this long for crime to increase.I thought it would have happened by as soon as the unemployment checks ran out in July.
Forget American Express, I never leave home without my Glock.
Dont be a statistic.
Defund the police!
I’ve been staying since summer at many limited properties, more because I find it a complete waste of money to pay for full service when hardly anything is being provided in service. So, for me, the balance is limited service (mostly Courtyard, Hyatt Place, Hilton Garden Inn).
One thing is evident at most of these properties. I am often the only other solo business traveler there that I can see. I notice mostly a lot of groups of friends, families, etc. Many are younger (in their 20’s) and have no respect for the property (you should see the hallways in the morning littered with bottles and food). The most disturbing trend is that because of lower rates many are using them as places to gather for small parties. Air Bnb is having the same problem.
More groups of young people, more parties, leads to more of these issues being reported. Hotels are unfortunately without much to do about it. Go back to higher rates and they will be empty. Charge less and they start attracting these situations.
@FatLip
EXACTLY! I never go anywhere without at least one gun and one other weapon…. impact, edged, or otherwise.
And I would advise others to do the same… just please get professional training.
lol, Frank
Maybe it’s because the young travelers mentioned by Stuart above are more likely to pay cash, but it seems that robbing hotels is foolish because most guests nowadays pay by credit/ debit card or gift card! Unless it’s a dump/ fleabag motel such as the robbery on Nov. 25 at the America’s Best Value Inn on Hamilton Street mentioned in Gary’s HI Express link above.
