The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard has just launched, and is available for applications. It’s a no annual fee cash back card, where you’ll want to consider it for bonus earning categories and benefits but not for everyday spend.

  • Initial Bonus: $100 cash bonus after
spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening

  • Earning: 4% on DoorDash orders; 3% on dining purchased directly from a restaurant; 2% on grocery stores; and 1% on all other purchases.

Rewards can be redeemed for card statement credits or bank account direct deposit or for gift cards. There is no minimum rewards balance necessary to redeem.

  • DoorDash benefits: A free year of DashPass, which cardmembers keep DashPass each anniversary year in which they spend $10,000 on the card.

DashPass provides $0 delivery fees, lower service fees (on eligible orders over a minimum amount) and 5% DoorDash credits back on pickup orders.

Plus: $25 off the first two Nationwide Shipping orders of $100 or more “$50 value” and 10% off first order of $35 or more each month (up to $15 per order) on convenience, grocery, alcohol and DashMart purchases “a potential $90 value.” The shipping offer is having food from one city delivered to another.

If you would actually spend to buy DashPass at $96 per year ($9.99 per month if purchased monthly) then this is like an extra 1% back on exactly $10,000 spend which makes the card overall ok for everyday spend – at exactly that amount – though I’d still recommend even a straight 2% cash back card for otherwise-unbonused spend.

Most Chase cards have had (as a merchant-funded offer where they’re looking for you to convert to an ongoing paid DashPass customer. During a pre-launch briefing, Ed Olebe, President of Chase co-brand cards, said he sees the DoorDash DashPass benefit on co-brand and Chase proprietary cards as complementary to the DoorDash card – meaning they can continue to offer the DashPass benefit to other customers. DoorDash’s Chief Business Officer agreed and “anticipate[s] both relationships persisting for some time.”

  • Other card benefits: No foreign transaction fees; Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver; Trip Cancellation / Interruption; Extended Warranty; Purchase Protection – Chase is genuinely commendable for not cutting these rich card benefits the way that Citi and Barclays have.

  • World Elite Mastercard benefits: Monthly $5 credit off your first DoorDash order each month as an eligible DashPass member; concierge service; $5 Lyft credit after taking 3 rides in one calendar month when paying with your DoorDash Rewards Mastercard; Mastercard Priceless® Experiences.

If you’re not someone that will take an annual fee card and aren’t a rewards maximizer, or you’re looking to fill in a hole in your strategy with a role player, this card has a place.

For instance you might supplement a 2% cash back card with 4% on DoorDash and 3% on dining if you don’t already have a card with a dining accelerator. Or you might just want a no annual fee card with Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver; Trip Cancellation / Interruption; Extended Warranty; and Purchase Protection.

Still, if you’re looking for a no annual fee Mastercard with robust protections like this plus various Mastercard benefits it’s hard to imagine why you wouldn’t prefer the Bilt Rewards Mastercard which offers orders of magnitude better rewards in my view plus lets you earn transferable points at no fee for paying monthly rent.

Comments

  1. Chase co-branded I would not be eligible since I’m 6/24. Otherwise I’d go for it.

  2. No foreign transaction fees on a no annual fee card isn’t bad. However, this just doesn’t tempt me as I hardly ever order out, yet alone from a delivery service.

  3. Door Dash seems to be the best of these restaurant delivery services
Unfortunately the good restaurants seem to be rare and crazy expensive once you add all the service fees tips and inflated pricing
I’m not sure I need yet another credit card with all I have now
And especially at present with chase sap reserve offering a 15 dollar monthly credit
In addition I buy their gift cards which yield me 5 points per dollar when I do use them
