Emirates flight EK521 from Thiruvananthapuram, India to Dubai was involved in an accident. The Boeing 777-300, registration number A6-EMW, caught fire on the ground in Dubai.

The plane hadn’t declared an emergency during the flight.

According to ATC recordings the aircraft performed a normal approach and landing, there was no priority or emergency declared. Upon contacting tower tower reminded the crew of lowering the gear and cleared the aircraft to land.

Another approach reported on tower frequency. About 2 minutes after EK-521 reported on tower, the crew reported going around, tower instructed the aircraft to climb to 4000 feet, the crew acknowledged climbing to 4000 feet, a few seconds later tower instructs the next arrival to go around and alerts emergency services. The position of the aircraft is described near the end of the runway.

At this point there are several conflicting reports about the incident. That’s unavoidable in the hours after an aviation incident, and media reports are based on misunderstandings of scarce information. Although several reports suggest the plane came down without landing gears extended (it’s possible that gear(s), if down, collapsed).

Thankfully the Dubai government reports that all 275 passengers and crew onboard were evacuated safely though again early reports are subject to change.

Airport operations — all departures and arrivals — are suspended, with an update pending at 5pm local time (9am Eastern).
