Emirates Boeing 777 Crash Lands, Catches Fire, All Passengers Reported Safe

Emirates flight EK521 from Thiruvananthapuram, India to Dubai was involved in an accident. The Boeing 777-300, registration number A6-EMW, caught fire on the ground in Dubai.

The plane hadn’t declared an emergency during the flight.

According to ATC recordings the aircraft performed a normal approach and landing, there was no priority or emergency declared. Upon contacting tower tower reminded the crew of lowering the gear and cleared the aircraft to land.

Another approach reported on tower frequency. About 2 minutes after EK-521 reported on tower, the crew reported going around, tower instructed the aircraft to climb to 4000 feet, the crew acknowledged climbing to 4000 feet, a few seconds later tower instructs the next arrival to go around and alerts emergency services. The position of the aircraft is described near the end of the runway.

Here’s the aircraft bursting in to flames.

And here’s the plane smoking and on fire:

At this point there are several conflicting reports about the incident. That’s unavoidable in the hours after an aviation incident, and media reports are based on misunderstandings of scarce information. Although several reports suggest the plane came down without landing gears extended (it’s possible that gear(s), if down, collapsed).

Thankfully the Dubai government reports that all 275 passengers and crew onboard were evacuated safely though again early reports are subject to change.

Airport operations — all departures and arrivals — are suspended, with an update pending at 5pm local time (9am Eastern).

  1. Good lord man, I know you don’t proofread your articles but now you’re not even proofreading your headlines!

    Halt and Crash Fire!

  2. So much for all the Emirates love. I’m crossing them off the list. This one is shaping up to be an epic pilot botch job, like Asiana in SFO only with less loss of life. The plane was attempting a go around after needing a reminder from the tower to put the gear down.

  3. @steve Emirates evacuated everyone and all passengers and crew lived, they got information out on this quickly, i’m pretty impressed by the response. i will wait to learn more about what caused the problem in the first place.

  4. I believe this is the 2nd or 3rd incident involving a 777 this year. The still photo of your embedded video shows the fuselage and the wing laying flush with the ground… no engine or landing gear down.
    How would that happen?
