How Aircraft Deicing Works

News and notes from around the interweb:

  • Alaska Airlines launches flight subscriptions at a monthly price for 6, 12, or 24 roundtrip nonstop flights each year. This is for West Coast routes in economy only, and with flexibility can get your cost down to around $100 per roundtrip. Creative, and Alaska no doubt projects plenty of breakage.

  • How aircraft de-icing works

  • US airline frequent flyer program awards cryptocurrency (Flycoin) rather than miles. The official term for this, by the way, is shitcoin. The metrics of value on this coin still show up as near-zero and haven’t changed since I explained the scheme last fall. (HT: @ATCPeter)

  • I hate ‘split operations’. I get that Terminal 5 at Heathrow is ostensibly ‘more premium’ (I do not agree) and the desire to put as much flying in there as possible for better connectivity with joint venture partner British Airways. But Terminal 3 has better lounges. And customers are going to be very confused.

  • Perhaps more common than you’d realize, even when you start to realize it’s more common than you thought.

  • Flight diverts due to snakes on a plane (HT: Jonathan W)

  1. I read the account you posted in the last week or two of the guy barred for threatening Hertz employees with a screwdriver.

I’m thinking their General Counsel ought to be disbarred for malpractice. You mess with other people’s lives, you mess with your own. They *know* they have systemic problems and choose not to address them. Their lawyers shouldn’t be partners in that effort. This whole saga is just remarkable for the volume and degree of failures happening at Hertz.

  2. Totally agree Gary about split terminal operations. A huge pain for U.K. flyers who park at the airport. Terminal 5 and terminal 3 long car parks are on complete opposite sides of the airport and will require a shuttle bus and a train/tube journey to connect.

This summer I have an outbound connection via DFW and an inbound via ORD so one of those journeys is now going to be an extra 40 mins at Heathrow.

  3. I went over my future car reservations and found one with Hertz. Canceled it right away. I am not doing business with them due to these false arrests. Their management should be in prison.

  4. Presumably AA premium people will be able to use the BA lounges. That’s going to make the Galleries even more crowded.

  5. The good news is that Heathrow is so user friendly…you can easily get from T3 to T5 in under 3 hours most days (unless you accidentally leave a tube of lip balm in your bag – then add 1-2 additional hours for security).
