Hurry: 20% Discount Redeeming Southwest Award Travel, Book By Thursday

Southwest Airlines is offering a 20% discount on award redemptions booked by 11:59 p.m. Central time on Thursday, March 16 for travel by May 24, 2023 with promo code SAVE20NOW.

  • Since Southwest awards can be cancelled with points redeposited with no fee, you can make speculative bookings to take advantage of this offer.

  • If you have existing awards you want to reprice, check the new price and then cancel/rebook (do not ‘change’ the flight as changes don’t take advantage of this discount code).

Roughly speaking you’ll get 1.5 cents per point against base fare, rather than 1.2 cents per points, under this offer (it’s better when factoring taxes). They’ve offered this deal in the past, most recently in October and it’s a good way to provide a good deal while filling up planes, and at the same time not cannibalizing higher fare paid travel that Southwest would otherwise generate – so wins all around.

Right now, by the way, award travel even counts towards elite status with Southwest.

Comments

  1. Are we confident that this promotion stacks with having rewards nights counting towards elite qualifying flights? The fine print states that it can’t be combined with any other promotion, not sure if this counts!

  2. Rather than lowering price, I see this as Southwest discounting in addition to selling Southwest giftcards at Costco for 10% off face value. The Sunday fares Southwest is charging to fly from Florida in the spring season seems very high.
