November 1 – 3 is this year’s ZorkFest in Las Vegas. I spoke there last year and had a great time. It was in Reno, so a bit less convenient, but still a beautiful setting (and sessions were held in what was once the suite were a certain person who later became President would first interact with a porn star who later became a household name).
This year’s event will be far less notorious, but certainly classic Vegas – hosted at the Horseshoe which was the original MGM Grand. And since I had a great time last year I agreed to do it again.
Events are a mix of beginner and advanced in miles and points but also casino loyalty which is something I’m only tangentially plugged into – so I pick up some things, too, like manufacturing casino status and generating the most comps. And they do optional group gaming, too and “hands-on training from experts on the topics of playing craps and blackjack” in a “judgment-free zone.” I think of myself as intermediate-level at both but could certainly use the mentoring. It would improve my confidence and make the games more fun – though I still understand math well enough that I’d be doing it for… fun.
Smaller and a bit more upscale than many of the miles and points events though still accessible to many, tickets are still available at their Early Bird price. I get no benefit from ticket sales, by the way. My only benefit if you come is the chance to meet you at an event I much enjoyed last year. Optional room block is available.
Was told that this November weekend is when the FT Mod do is taking place in LA. But since LA and Vegas are such a short and cheap hop apart by air, probably a good time to play the social game in both places at once.
About the artwork above, isn’t that an artistic rendition of some of your fellow BA bloggers?
True “experts on . . . playing craps” all agree: some bets offer better odds than others, but every single one has odds in favor of the house. No combination of bets, no betting strategy can eliminate the house’s edge. Want to win at blackjack? You need the right strategy and the ability to count cards without getting banned.
Sorry, I essentially typed the logical equivalent of less than when I should have said less than or equal for craps. You can produce no house beating strategy, but it’s not like it’s roulette.
