A TikTok video showing a man “manspreading” on a flight has sparked fury – along with millions of views – because the passenger isn’t just taking up their seat opponent’s space. They are spreading out across the aisle – and underneath the seat of the woman on the other side of the aircraft.
Traveling coach between the U.S. and South America, passengers need to guard the little space they have for the long trip. On the other hand, everyone wants as much space for themselves as possible to be comfortable. This sprawling space invader, though, took things to a whole new level.
@claireandpeter GOODBYE
A Spirit Airlines passenger argues that manspreading is justified because the carrier offers so little legroom, never acknowledging that for an additional fee they offer seats with more space.
- Someone may not wish to spend more money to travel, even if they need it
- That doesn’t give them the right to encroach upon the same, limited space another passenger paid for
Here’s how to handle a seat-spreading situation.
- Try to start a polite conversation about it.
- Should that not help, look around to see if there’s an empty seat in the cabin. If there is, ask a crewmember if you can change seats.
- And if there’s not, enlist a crewmember to help ensure your seat opponent stays within the confines of their own space.
At the end of the day though it means a certain amount of discomfort for a limited (though seemingly interminable) period of time and other people can be awful. Passengers shouldn’t have to endure this, but there’s a limit to how much escalation is possible or wise while stuck inside a metal tube. What would you do?
This looks completely staged. She travels with (and features) her boyfriend in most of her videos. But he’s not featured in this video? That’s probably his leg!
I think that the Mike Tyson form of conflict resolution is more effective.
Why didn’t the guy move to the empty row in front of him?
Time for accidental hot coffee spill
If nothing else worked, I would have put MY legs in the aisle too. He couldn’t really complain now could he?
Yea, the guy is in the wrong. At the same time, the airline industry has created this problem and is expecting customers to sort it out. I’m 6’4″ and I cannot even begin to pay 2-3x the cost of a ticket so I can have adequate leg room. To complicate the situation further, I may have 2 of 3 legs of a flight with totally adequate space while in the third I have my knees literally wedged into the seat in front of me–and that is before the passenger in front of me decides to tilt the seat back.
So fake – unless we assume that no one tried to walk up or down the aisle entire flight? A flight attendant would have told this guy to get his legs out of the aisle.
A beverage cart rolling down the aisle from behind will solve that problem ASAP. And I concur that this was staged for clicks.
@tommyleo, Totally agree! 100% staged. If you look closely you’ll see ‘his’ foot’ is touching ‘hers’. Also, like another writer said, the seats in front of the dude are vacant, she could’ve easily moved there. Not only that, if she has the aisle seat – as seen in the video, where is her boyfriend? Middle seat beside her? Then her boyfriend could’ve switched with her and then, being in the aisle seat, forced the dude to stop the mansplaning.
So yeah, fake.
Gary, please stop with the trashy staged TikToxic videos! It shows that you have a lack of creativity and lack of ability to find worthy news. You already published several articles a day. You can either publish less or do better research to find more suitable content to replace the social media trash. As others have said, it’s very fake, as is such a good majority of the content on that platform. Additionally, look at the trashiness of this lady filming! You can’t even tell that she is wearing pants or shorts of any kind, or even has underwear of some kind on for that matter!
You blame the airlines for causing tiny spaces, and say that there is little they can do or should do because of escalation risk. In reality, there is plenty that can be done such as ordering them, keep their body parts to themselves. Ordering them to stop having unwanted physical contact with others around them. Ordering them to stop being a safety hazard by spreading out across the aisle. And having penalties such as suspended usage or permanent ban from that airline, as well as face civil and criminal punishment on the ground.
And really they could just have a few cameras mounted in the plane to be able to provide evidence for this kind of thing. That alone would be a good deterrent for people as well as help with legal issues that arise from these kind of behaviors.
Also, the FAA and other country equivalents, could come up with an acceptable restraining solution for passengers like this, where they can be moved to the back of the plane or restrained in their existing seat. It is no different than being placed in a cell on a train or boat.
Actually, the offender should be the one to move to another seat, if there is one available, not the person being encroached upon.
Tabloid fodder.
Yeah I’m all for exposing these guys. I had my own incident with my own photos and video I took myself :

@E C: Airlines are selling space. If you don’t fit, buy more or stay home.
If you can’t fit in a Toyota Corolla, do you demand that Toyota give you a Camry for the same price?
Get real.
As a large man with severe arthritis in both hips and knees, if I can’t straighten my legs every so often I’m in for a crap load of pain.
