Most Chase Sapphire Cardholders Don’t Know They Can Get 10% Off Amazon And 3x Points

Sapphire Preferred Card

How did I not know about this opportunity to get 10% off on many gift cards – even for Amazon – while earning 3 points per dollar on the spending? Apparently this is a new benefit from DoorDash DashPass.

  • All Chase Sapphire card holders as well as other Chase cardmembers get complimentary DashPass. A lot of you are DashPass members whether from Chase or from purchasing subscriptions. Apparently there are 22 million DashPass accounts.

  • They sell gift cards at a 10% discount to DashPass customers. There look to be about 100 different purchase options like Starbucks, Lowe’s, Best Buy and Total Wine.

  • Most interesting, they have Zift gift cards which in turn are redeemable for Amazon gift cards and others like Spotify and Southwest Airlines.

Gift card purchases on DoorDash code as “dining” and are eligible for credit card accelerator category earning (e.g. 3x with a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve®, 3x with the card from Bilt Rewards and 4x with Amex Gold). Note that if you have your DashPass as a Chase benefit, you need to pay with the Chase card to use the benefit.

You can use this, then, to get 10% off Amazon and earn 3x Chase points on your Amazon spend at the same time.

In researching this offer, it appears to have been launched back in November. Doctor of Credit covered it as a short-term promotion. But what’s actually going on is that 10% off of gift cards is the basic, ongoing feature of this program and they sometimes run bigger offers like 15% off for Mother’s Day.

  • You can redeem up to 10 times
  • The discount is capped at $20 per redemption (so you can buy 10 $200 gift cards with the benefit).
  • Any card-linked DoorDash offers should stack with this, also.

The offer shows an expiration date of March 31, 2025 but the discount is still being promoted and works just fine. This appears to be an ongoing offer, with expirations set to have the flexibility to end it (since the program is still-new).

Need I mention that Chase has brought back their best-ever 100,000 point initial bonus offer for the Sapphire Preferred Card, earned after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening?

  1. The only concern with gift cards is that if the company goes bust, you’re pretty much out of luck. And seeing how things are going these days, I wouldn’t be stocking up on gift cards if I were you. Sure, Amazon may be fine, but any other smaller or even medium-sized retailer? Nope. Don’t do it.

  2. Maybe self-interested points geeks should lead with Chase offering 5x on Amazon via their Freedom cards…

  3. @roundtree – this is Sapphire, Freedom is capped at $1500 spend and only for a quarter, so this is a way to get bonused while exceeding that (plus likely next quarter and beyond as well)

  4. It seems that you can not transfer your Zift balance to Amazon, neither can you purchase an Amazon gift card. You can only use it to buy eGifts from the ZillionsGift site which are deliverable via e-mail. That’s quite the limitation and a deal breaker for me. Unless I’m wrong…

  5. What Colin says. The graphic on their own page https://zillionsgift.com/how-to-use doesn’t show Amazon and also says “available brands … may vary and are subject to change” so trying this as a long-range strategy may not work terribly well.

The only way to see what’s available is to buy one of these stupid cards and enter it on their site and it’s not worth the risk.

  6. @roundtree, I thought the same thing but isn’t 10% cash back + 3x better than 5x? I have 3 different Freedom cards with 5x, but it seems like this is the better offer. If you actually pay for DashPass you could use your Freedom to pay and get 5x on top of the 10% discount, but if your DashPass comes from holding the Sapphire card you have to pay with that to get the discount.

@Colin B, I think the issue is that some Zift cards can be used for Amazon, others can’t. You have to make sure to buy a Zift card that specifically shows Amazon on the front of the card. The one listed first at DoorDash does not, but others do.

  7. @Darin, in their FAQ, first question is:

Can I purchase Gift Cards on this site?

No, this site can only be used to redeem a Zift Zillions of Gifts Card for available eGifts. If you would like to purchase Gift Cards, visit TheGiftCardShop.com.

So I have to purchase a card from TheGiftCardShop and then go back to ZillionsGift to then buy an Amazon card? Is that what people are doing?

Not sure how a purchase at TheGiftCardShop will earn me 3x points as a Dining purchase.

  8. @Colin B, you purchase the gift cards at DoorDash. If you have DashPass, there is a 10% discount, and all purchases made there code as “dining”, getting 3x from the Sapphire Preferred.

  9. Anyone running into payment issue at Doordash? no matter which payment methods I tried including Chase Sapphire cards, I always get a payment error (either telling me I can’t use this card or unable to charge your card). Same error on my wife’s door dash account. we both have DashPass. Tried desktop version and app version.

  10. Took a while to find this, but there is a list of available gift cards brands through Zift. You have to go to their FAQs and find their link to https://www – thegiftcardshop – com/zift-multi-brand-gift-cards

  11. I purchased five $200 Zgift eGift cards through the DoorDash app and was able to successfully redeem the first two. However, I’ve encountered persistent issues with redeeming the remaining three.

I initially contacted Zgift customer support and was told to try a variety of troubleshooting steps—using different browsers, switching between mobile data and home Wi-Fi, and waiting 4 hours before trying again. None of these suggestions worked.

When I called back, I was told there was nothing more they could do and that the issue was due to DoorDash sending me the incorrect email. I then contacted DoorDash support and spent 42 minutes on the phone, only to be told to wait another 24 hours and to email the redemption error messages and reference numbers to doordash@launchgiftcards.com.

This experience has been incredibly frustrating, and frankly, not worth the trouble or risk. I would caution others to beware—this process is far from seamless, and support between DoorDash and Zgift is confusing and inconsistent.
