‘Only Three Of You Get Oxygen Masks’—Spirit Flight Attendant Quizzes The Cabin, Tells Parents To Pick A Child

Some airlines have turned their safety videos into ambitious cinematic projects, or cheeky quests for attention, and that’s controversial. But since most passengers ignore the safety video, doing things a little bit differently may get greater attention. And since the safety briefing is required, why not make it fun?

Spirit Airlines doesn’t have video monitors in the cabin, let alone seat back entertainment screens, so flight attendants do their safety briefing live (American Airlines flight attendants have to do it live on nearly all domestic planes, too).

This Spirit flight attendant turns it into first a quiz and then a comedy routine.

  • She’s shown you where the oxygen masks will be dropping from. Were you paying attention? Three passengers raise their hands to identify the location. They’re the ones who will be getting a mask.

  • Parents have to put on their mask before assisting children (so they don’t pass out in the meantime). But what if you have more than one child? Kids, your parents have to pick their favorite. Didn’t do your homework last week? You’re not getting a mask.

I do wonder if there are young kids on the flight who were genuinely worried that they weren’t the favorite – and wouldn’t get a mask if they needed one! – because they didn’t do their homework? But I that passengers listened to the whole safety announcement! One commenter offers that Spirit Airlines, which just emerged from bankruptcy amidst continued massive financial losses, “She about to save that company.”

  1. Such ridiculous clickbait and I’m ashamed that I fell for it. The FAs comments were obviously a joke but your “Won’t somebody PLEASE think of the children” faux hysteria is much funnier (as is the idea that children are little existentialists who listen intently to airline safety briefings while pondering their fate should an emergency happen).

  2. There are 4 oxygen masks above every 3 seat group. If not the flight should be unfit to fly

  3. @Tim Dunn:
correct, bit what you did NOT mention, this only counts for single isle planes! Then, those masks haven long enough supply tubes to also reach the row ahead or behind!
STAY at the PLANETRUTH! ratger then spead 1/2 truth!

  4. To speak to children that way is unconscionable and mean spirited. This is just another reason to never fly Spirit. Statements like, “Kids, your parents have to pick their favorite. Didn’t do your homework last week? You’re not getting a mask.” would terrify many young children.

  5. @NSL14 with all due respect (and a smile on my face) lighten up. It was a joke.

Seriously, everything f-ing thing anyone says anymore offends someone. If one’s kid is terrified by that statement and one can’t figure out how to settle said kid out they’re not much of a parent. And if someone’s kid is going to be triggered by a simple joke maybe they should consider driving instead.

  6. “She(‘s) about to save that company.” Unless it’s a different ‘vernacular’… then again, I doubt proper grammar will save Spirit Airlines, so… smoke ‘em if you got ‘em!

  7. Hey TIM DUNN, not all planes are built equally; believe it or not some rows or sides of the plane don’t have 4 masks but 3. I remember having to program seatmaps in a DCS (departure control system) for an airline to inhibit infants on the RIGHT side of the plane because the overheads only had 3 masks!

  8. if NK or any airline doesn’t have at least one more oxygen mask than seats per row, they cannot accept infants.

and since NK and any other airline that has seat assignments does it through their res system, the process has to start well before DCS.
