I would like a review of the best times to look for airline award availability and how that varies by airline, class of service, destination, etc.
I am very new to this and I signed up for the United 50000 miles cc. I am now looking at what to do next to earn miles, and the best way to spend the miles. I am trying to figure out how to search for awards seats and get the best deals. I have no idea how many miles it costs to go anywhere or even if it varies by time etc.
My ever-present question, which perhaps you can shed some light on, is…. how do airline partner awards work behind the scenes?
When I book an LH award from UA, does UA pay LH? If so, how much? Or is this just the “cost of doing business”?
I guess the broader question is “when I am accommodated on another airline, how does that work behind the scenes?” FT has reports of distressed UA passengers on the BOS-ICN mistake fare having boarding passes for re-accommodation on SQ being _torn up by the SQ gate agent_ because the passengers weren’t “worth enough” so clearly some money is changing hands…
Other questions:
– Why don’t airlines open all remaining international premium cabin seats for awards for day-of travel? Surely getting something for them is better than having them go empty?
– How many GS, 1K, 1MM, 2MM etc UA folks are there?
– Will any airline do 1MM status matches?
– Why does UA keep getting worse for FQTV?
I’m not an uber traveler, I collect miles and take 6-8 round trips a year. I would like more tips on how to redeem miles. Every time I try to find something International Business Class I get frustrated and give up.
not necesarily an entire post lol, but how precisely would you fly with an airline, but credit the flight to another frequent flier number?
are there different ways of doing this? ssfe, risk free, fool proof ways? or do they all involve some risk or possibility to not suceed/get turned down?
can i do it online, or does it have to involve an airline rep?
for instance flying an award flight and crediting the flight to another FF program? or doing a hidden city route and crediting the flight to another airline FF?
Isnt the other airline you’re crediting the flight to aware that you didnt actually fly the trip on their plane?
does it have to be within an alliance? a partner?
i’d appreciate if you’d shed some more light on this…

I have more personal request: how do you make it work? We know that you have pretty busy job, big family, and you write a very good blog that I’m sure takes lots of time (even before your little helpers get into play). How do you structure your time so you have time for everything? What’s your usual day routine? How much time you spend on each activity and how much time you procrastinate/downtime? I was always interested in learning from successful and energetic people, your experience will be very helpful!
