An American Airlines first class passenger has unlocked a new way to be awful at 30,000 feet.
They removed their shoes and propped both of their sock-clad feet inside the seatback pocket assembly, using it as a makeshift footrest. Perhaps it was already broken, but they’re clearly stretching it out further. And that storage compartment is designed for small items like magazines or safety cards – not feet.
Now I understand why these seatback pockets are always broken.

One commenter offers, “Those feet look like a sculpture project that was abandoned by the artist.”
Need I say that sitting in first class clearly doesn’t require having any? I’ve been a strong critic of Delta CEO Ed Bastian’s proposal that a passenger banned from any one airline should be banned from every airline. And then I see this.
Normally, my criticism of what passengers do with their feet focuses on walking barefoot into the lavatory. That sticky stuff on the floor isn’t water. At least there, though, the damage is mostly self-inflicted, and other passengers only have to see it happen and know it’s happening. Here, they’re actually doing damage to the aircraft.
To be fair, American’s first class seats could be more comfortable. The basic MiQ seat isn’t well-designed or padded. But that is no excuse.
While I don’t condone this type of behavior, the airlines have created this monster when they took away aircraft with lie flat seats.. Paying a first class fare as I always do, it is expected to not have your legs dangling down for several hours. I would not do what this guy did, I simply choose not to fly. But I certainly understand those that do!
Maybe the rude and destructive feet thing can be classified as a “safety hazard” at the Federal level, so the airlines all have a uniform way of classifying the behavior, just like tampering with smoke detectors in the lavatories. People that do those kinds of things on a plane don’t respect anything other than the “virtual hammer”, obviously they don’t generally care about others.
Crew should have done something about it. But this is no longer your Father’s American Airlines. If I was rank and file I wouldn’t give a shit either based on the culture management has set.
Gary has good intentions but could unknowingly be anti-woman. This blog is part of boardingarea.com. Today, the post just on top of Gary is this one, which explains the problem…. https://pointsmilesandbling.com/legroom-and-shorter-passengers/
On the other hand, it shows what had behaviour Canadians have. Just yesterday, a Canadian built jet landing in Toronto (Canada) couldn’t even land straight and flipped. And this link showing Canadians can’t even sit still. :p
The 3rd World slide continues. Ain’t ‘merica great?
When certain folks comment here, they are sometimes petty enough to critique Gary’s occasional grammatical imperfections and to chastise his use of artificial intelligence generated artwork, but here, fellas, this post is peak VFTW, gossip over our fellow passengers’ misbehavior. This is why we come here. No, it’s not a ‘serious’ place—it’s not the NYTimes or now-banned-by-the-state-for-disloyalty ‘evil’ Associated Press—it’s just good fun. And yeah, please put your damn feet down sir or madam. Act civilized!
Gross.
If an airline would make it permissible to beat unruly, dirty, stinky fellow passengers with a stick, I’d fly them every trip. Until then, grin and bear the Great American Traveler, gee, ain’t they swell?
@Alex L — If you are who I think you are, I’d have gone with: ‘blight’
“Helen”, maybe you can refresh my memory on when US airlines had lie flat seats on domestic flights. And I am not talking about transcon flights. You imply that you have been a frequent paying first class passenger in the past. Sorry, I am calling BS on your comments.
It is a sad place that we are in now with the poor behavior of people.
You can take the trash out of the trailer park…
Not too long ago , ok in the 80’s and 90’s flying was seen as a priviledge and people used to dress to impress and there was no women bearing low curt blouses with previews of perceived cleaveage and definitely no men showing un-nexcessary bludges with tight shorts or pants. These days no cabin or airline is sparred the vulgarity of some of the passengers behavior especially when it comes to their feet. Yes, we all have them and while most do not put them on the back of seats , tray tables or any where else where they do not belong there are the classless few that do and that seem to be raised in a barn. Airlines especially the US domestic carriers have to take some responsibility for this behavior as many have allowed it. There is not one international airline that I am aware of that would allow a person to put their feet anywhere but the floor. Its time to class up people and to stop behaving like you were raised in a barn.
