News and notes from around the interweb:
- The shifting winds… Southwest’s Vice President of DEI changed his title on LinkedIn.
Southwest pilots (pilots tend to skew heavily conservative) have been unhappy with DEI at the airline for awhile.
The thing to understand about airlines is that (1) they’re big corporations, and those have skewed liberal in recent years (a long way from when they were bogeymen of the left) and (2) they’re heavily regulated, so they blow with the wind, both responding to pressure from regulators and wanting to curry favor from whatever administration is in power.
In the longer-run, change here seems more temporary? While there’s a broader shift in the culture, that’s pulled back from ‘peak woke’, the federal bureaucracy isn’t changing [there’s significant self-selection effects for who staffs it] and the people who have risen to the top at corporations have been able to succeed under this framework as well. A new President alone doesn’t make for lasting change – as is often said, “personnel is policy.”
- Etihad could raise $1 billion in an IPO at a $5 billion valuation
- New Sho Shibuya-designed Lufthansa first class pajamas debuts Munich – New York JFK in February.
The Japanese artist Sho Shibuya became world-famous with his works, which change in impressive color gradients from dawn to sunset. The contemporary artist has created a unique design for Lufthansa, inspired by the view of the sky that can only be experienced high above the clouds from an airplane. However, his art is not just for viewing but can be felt and experienced up close.
With great craftsmanship, the premium homewear brand Tekla from Copenhagen has brought the artist’s skyline to life in a collection of high-quality loungewear and produces the exclusive garments. They are made from fine organic cotton satin with a shiny finish.
- Everyone’s a critic. I say – politics aside – anything that elevates personal grooming standards in the cabin is to be applauded.

Well, that does it… now, we’re living in a ‘golden age’ (again)!
How’s the price of eggs (up 37%, if even in stock), world peace ‘on Day 1’ (never mind about that), and ‘no tax on tips’ (oh, that’s just for the super-rich and their ‘bonuses’)? At least everyone else gets this ‘victory’ on the culture war front. Tired of winning yet?
@AndyS You put your life savings into Dear Leader’s new crypto? *rug-pull incoming*
Will they insist that Caitlyn Jenner have identification that says Bruce Jenner.
Good. Dress up time is over.
In 2016 he promised to have a better program than Obamacare. In 2024 he said he had a “concept” for it. In 2016 he promised to raise taxes on the rich. He cut them. And so on and so on. Yet people keep believing a man who has betrayed everyone who ever trusted him, bankers, wives, investors, voters…he even abandoned his own vice president to be nearly murdered. And this is who we’ve left to set national policy that corporations are pressured to follow? Last time I looked being kind and fair to everybody was part of what America said it was about.
Told you so.
The shelf life for dei was very short.
Shorter than the blm nonsense.
Both were culture war distractions for the party of grievances (democrat) party and it was eaten up by the low IQ leeches that support them.
For an example look at the posts by @1990 and the price of eggs talking point and @drrichard and the perpetually debunked tax cuts for the rich lie.
@AndyS
Good morning, comrade. Or, should I say, good evening. Please enjoy the fresh borscht.
I am so excited for those tariffs, starting February 1, 2025, because the practical effect is a 10-25% tax increase on all of us. It’s going to be so ‘great’ again.
As the liberal French economist (I know, several scary words for you) Bastiat once said, “when goods do not cross borders, soldiers will.” Even Iraq-war-on-false-pretenses George W. Bush warned us against nativism, protectionism, and isolationism. Ignore them though.
Thankfully, right-wing and corporate propaganda will soon be in overdrive to distract us from who is really to blame–your returning god-king and his bro-ligarchs. Big Tech has clearly put their thumb on the scale this time, either out of fear or in hopes of the de-regulation and tax cuts.
Those tariffs combined with mass-deporting our non-criminal migrant laborers (the ones who pick the crops, cut the meat, support kitchen staff, etc.) will cause even more inflation and also supply shortages. So, fine, do it, make employers use E-Verify–quick results that way. Let’s go!
(You’ll say, ‘but, but.. once He builds the concentration camps at the southern border, sorry, the ‘Freedom’ camps, then the ‘illegals’ will pick our crops for us again, this time for free!’)
Of course, we’ll always have Russian agents (and/or useful idiots) like you, @AndyS, telling us it was ‘DEI’ or ‘Antifa’ or ‘Democrat-run cities’ or ‘illegals’ or another countries’ fault. Oh, and thanks for remembering Black Lives Matter–See, you DO care!
Anyway, off to Greenland!
@drrichard and the Democrats have been promising to pull folks out of poverty for about 50+ years now, and there are still poor people in this Country. More so than ever. Lest you have forgotten, the last time around he was fighting Impeachment by Pelosi and her squad. And every time he did not get Impeached, she and her squad plotted the next round Impeachment move. Hopefully, they can concentrate on something other than hate this time.
As for D.E.I. well, I for one, in the field of Aviation, I prefer the most qualified individuals possible in the ATC Towers and in the left and right seats up in the Cockpit.
@American
Bah! Cock-pit! I got it! Because you think only men should be pilots. Sorry, I meant ‘merit-based’ …10-4.
Reminds me of what an actor you may know just said: “It’s like Daddy arrived, and he’s taking his belt off!”
Or, if you prefer, from The Simpsons: That’s a paddlin’
The vastly white, vastly male, vastly hetero, vastly Christian good-ol’ boy pilots don’t want women, minorities, gays, or heathens breaking up their near-monopoly? Shocking!
@Christian
It’s like @AndyS decided to try a new name for a day.
What happened to ‘merit-based’? You’re saying the quiet part out loud. Get your bullshit propaganda straight!
How Christ-like of you. Did you forget that your namesake preached ‘empathy’ not hate? Oh, no, the whole ‘religious conservative’ thing was a farce, after all. Bah!
See y’all again soon (AndyS, Mantis, AC, TexasTJ, whatever you right-wing bigots wanna call yourselves)
Good. Hire on merit and aptitude alone.
