The regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fallen, and he fled the country. However there are reports that his plane crashed. While this is not fully confirmed, the aircraft may have been shot down. It disappeared from radar.
The Ilyushin Il-76 (registration YK-ATA) departed Damascus heading towards Iraq, but then headed northeast over the Mediterranean coast towards a Russian military base – but then turned back and dropped out of view near a rebel-held area west of Homs.

Of course there are theories that this was all faked. However Assad probably wouldn’t have needed to fake it – either he was accepted by another state as he fled or he wasn’t. He even sought the assistance of long-time enemy the United States, promising to sever ties with Iran and Hezbollah in exchange for assistance remaining in power.
Assad wasn’t the only traveler facing challenging getting out of Syria at the end.

Meanwhile those who stayed behind are pillaging the country’s central bank. My big question now is what happens to the Sheraton in Damascus.
If the plane crashed or was shot down, there are satellites that caught it.
While they can’t show who was on the plane, if the plane was shot down, it is known to western intelligence agencies, Russia and China that have satellite capabilities.
A plane with a turned-off transponder will not appear on flight tracking websites, unless it’s in PSR range at an airfield
The fate of a country is a little more important than the Sheraton in Damascus. I have friends on both sides of the Syrian conflict, and frankly their stories are gut-wrenching.
What happens to the Sheraton is Damascus line is one of the stupidest and tone deaf things I have ever seen written for public consumption.
You have got to be kidding!
What about all the people?
Whatever your thoughts on Assad, he did protect the minority faiths in Syria.
Now that the Turks are there, it won’t be good.
Gary, your comment about concern over a hotel, at a time and moment in history such as this, is beneath you.
One can only hope he rots in hell. Doubt it though – so much misinformation and disinformation.
One can also hop this will inspire revolt in Iran, but that is a very different story. It might inspire people to act, but the Ayatollahs’ regime quite strong internally, and the brutality they use is harsh.
But, more importantly, while it’s also a minority of regime supporters (estimates are at around 20% – 30%), there’s a large group of non-regime supporters, but traditional people, who don’t want to be involved in any revolution attempts.
The key to toppling that regime is and has been – like in “Syria” – the ethnic divides that exist there, but it’s not as easy as in “Syria”.
Isn’t the next US president’s pick for Director of National Intelligence, you know, head of all the spies, FBI, CIA, and government secrets, etc., friends with this dictator (and Putin). Seems like a ‘great’ pick for such an important position. Great… again. NOT.
Democrats hate Assad but love Al Qaeda thats taking over. They claim to support a strict separation of church and state except for Islamic states with sharia law like Syria is going to be now. Assad is a dictator but he is secular. Id rather be governed by a secular dictator than religious extremists.
Planes don’t just crash in 2024 without social media photo video of an aftermath. I’m sorry but this post is just credulous.
@Wesley
This has nothing to do with Democrats. They lost. They aren’t going to be in power for a while. Who cares what they think or prefer. Not the issue here. And I doubt any of them want dictators or terrorists. Nice false dichotomy there.
The next US President doesn’t care about Syria, or anyone, but himself. Maybe you trust him more than the current guy. Cool. I hope he does well, because I’m on ‘this plane’ like you are, and I’d like to see it arrive safely.
The B B C says there are no reports of a crash but that the flight turned east and went to a 2000 ft altitude.
Syria has been chopped up between Russia, Turkey (who are fighting Kurds that the US supports, except when we don’t), Iran and with Israel having a strategic piece too. As an integrated country it has not existed for a long, long time. If the people who overthrow this miserable dictator are linked in to ISIS, then blame the US for creating that awful organization by utterly mishandling the occupation of Iraq, an unnecessary war based on lies. Meanwhile there are tens of thousands of innocent civilians rotting away in Syrian refugee camps left over from that conflict–maybe now some of them can go home. The whole area has been a disaster for many years and I doubt it will improve in our lifetimes.
And I agree with you Wesley, except that the next president is a sucker for Putin’s flattery and financial help. He can be trusted as far as his overweight body can be thrown as he betrays everyone who trusts him. Many decades ago the right wing John Birch Society raved about “agents of Moscow in the White House”–I guess they were finally right!
@1990
Nobody believes your democrat lies anymore. Gabbard is not a Russian asset, nor is Trump. Sorry that your Obama/Biden forever wars will soon be ending. Your foolish leftist policies resulted in millions of deaths across the world, but you still pretend to care more, so it’s ok I guess? And yes, switching out a secular dictator for am islamist one is precisely the issue, except of course to juveniles like you that worry more about what your gender identity is today.
1990,
the US public says that they are tired of being the police force for the world and spending hundreds of billions of dollars to arm states that have little to no political import for the US.
Trump’s national security and foreign policy policies reflect what the American people want.
it is very sad what is happening in Syria and has happened for decades but Syria’s neighbors have to decide they care about the situation and do something about which is precisely what is happening in Europe because of Ukraine.
Further update: Assad has arrived in Moscow. So the plane flew to a low altitude to temporarily avoid radar. Seems likely because the plane did not plummet like when the Wagner head was murdered when his plane was shot down by Putin.
I wonder if the flight route will later be known. I wonder if it was given overflight permission from some countries or if it flew illegally over some countries, risking being shot down.
@Mantis @Tim Dunn
Delicious. Please continue to feed me. This libcuck troll is always hungry.
I’ve said before, and I’ll say again, these days, I could care less about the idealism that your folk seems to hate. No, now, I relish in the chaos, like a late-stage George Carlin. Let. It. Burn.
As for Syria, I’m just happy that Putin’s puppet had to flee to Moscow.
