California Governor Gavin Newsom has struck a deal with Uber and Lyft that (1) will unionize drivers, and (2) deliver big cost cuts to the ridesharing platforms. But it’s the unions themselves that will benefit most; helpful to the Governor as he prepares for a presidential run.

I’m not certain that bidding for a driver is a tip, exactly, since tips does not actually stand for ‘to insure prompt service’. But it’s just another way that Uber has lost the plot since picking Expedia’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to run the business.
Uber is run by the former CEO of Expedia (2005 – 2017). No wonder it’s become such a terrible experience for both riders and drivers.
Marriott recently updated its terms and conditions for its Uber partnership, removing details of how many points you earn and referring you to their partnership page for that instead. Uber and Lyft have announced that they’re leaving Minneapolis May 1, 2024 in response to new city rules on driver pay. Uber is clear this will mean no airport pickups or drop offs. Lyft’s statement leaves open some ambiguity about the airport, although if they continue with airport service it may be only for out of towners.
