A JetBlue passenger from Florida went viral after blessing her flights with holy water and oil prior to takeoff.
On February 15, as she boarded a flight to Punta Cana, she dipped her fingers into a bottle of holy water, drawing the sign of the cross on the aircraft’s exterior near the door, and praying, “In Jesus’ name we pray…Amen!” Gospel music plays in the background of the video, which has been viewed over 6 million times.
She then repeats the ritual on her return flight to Orlando on February 20. In a follow-up, she explained that she receives the blessed oil from her church, where her stepfather serves as a pastor. “He prays over the oil and passes it out to the congregation.” She says she keeps bottles of the oil at home and in her purse. She was scared to fly after recent airline incidents, and said “God kept us safe. God kept us covered, and the devil is a liar.”

Sometimes airline employees take a similar approach, by the way. Pakistan International Airlines is perhaps best known for sacrificing a goat as part of its maintenance procedures (as well as flying with more passengers than seats (and making customers stand for 1700 miles). But then more than 30% of the airline’s pilots were found to have fake licenses.
One thing I’ll never understand is why True Believers are so afraid of dying. Isn’t the whole point to get the Earth part over and ascend to heaven to be with God for eternity? Why resist or delay that process?
Given that driving on the roads is massively more risky that flying what does she do when she drives? Has an exorcism performed?
Aer Lingus (EI) has a blessing of its fleet every year. A priest is escorted onto the tarmac, says a prayer over the assembled aircraft for safe travels and then sprinkles holy water on each. It’s a long-standing tradition going back to its early days. And judging by their safety record, it works!
So her God will spare her life because she sprinkled some holy water but will let two planes collide and kill a bunch of innocent people. Ok, got it.
Good for her. I say do whatever helps you get by. I hope there is a Jesus and that he smiled. I don’t want people to judge me and I only want the best for others.
There are probably a few airlines out there where sprinkling holy water would make their planes burst into flame. Exactly which airlines would be an interesting exercise for the reader.
