News and notes from around the interweb:
- Witnesses Describe Horrific Scene With ‘Blood Everywhere’ as Man Repeatedly Stabs Seatmate With Homemade Shank On Alaska Airlines Flight to Las Vegas
Lopez had been sitting quietly for the majority of the two-hour flight to Las Vegas, but as the Boeing 737 started its initial descent, the suspect got up from his seat several times in quick succession before heading to the bathroom.
Lopez remained in the bathroom for a while, but when he returned, he suddenly launched into a frenzied attack on his seatmate, punching and hitting him with what appeared to be a homemade shank made out of pens tied together with tape. One witness described a gruesome scene onboard with ‘blood everywhere’ as the victim’s wife screamed at Lopez to stop attacking her husband while trying to shield her seven-year-old son from the suspect.

NEW: 62-year-old Boeing whistleblower John Barnett found dead in his truck after he didn't show up for a legal interview linked to a case against Boeing.

Trying to go to Cincinnati in May by train and it’s my fault for thinking a metro area of 1.75 million people would be served by more than 3 trains a week that all don’t arrive in the middle of the night. It used to see 216 per day. pic.twitter.com/J5tK1urOCz

The TSA now sends 50% of pilots and FAs through regular security. I wonder if they changed that number to 10% they would be able to apply more time to real threats and find the guys home made shank.
Firefox detected a potential security threat
@SMR … +1 .
Regarding the mayhem and violence , will this happen more with the border open to allow the frothy criminals and terrorists into our homeland ?
@SMR So now TSA is supposed to confiscate your pens and Scotch tape?
Hi Alert, I don’t know about being being “frothy”, that applies more to beer. However, I do know of an obese criminal with orange hair and a rape conviction who loves dictators and incites riots. Since his midnight babblings make less sense than Cobra Commander’s I guess he is full of froth. Or something.
This story actually links back to a prior VFTW story about using cell phones in flight. Folks are crazy enough now. Adding cell phone use into the air will only adding to crazy flier incidents.
ABC News investigated Lopez and the case a little further, which reveled that Lopez is not a citizen of the U.S., he is unemployed and “has no ties to Las Vegas.” He will be held in custody until his trial.

Welcome to Joe Biden’s America.
@Gary … Domestic air travel has gone downhill , and will never recover . The passengers and the airlines have made it into a challenge , rather than a procedure . Nothing pleasant any longer .
Fuel from the landing gear: This was SFO. A greater agglomeration of know-nothing, nosy do-gooders could scarcely be imagined. Fake news sites such as this spread panic during Covid. To their great disappointment Covid morphed into less harmless flu, so they’ve latched onto Boeing to spread fear and increase clicks. Remember when there were editors that kept this kind of idiocy isolated?
@drrichard GROW UP. If you want to spew your 1st-grade level vitriol, feel free to do so on Reddit, but this is a Travel Blog. Gary, you mentioned upping the game on moderating content, @drrichard would be a good place to start.
Boeing Whistle blower accidentally tripped out of 60th floor window and fell to his death Putin style all self inflicted
And Boeing reports being deeply saddened by the news
And now for the non fake news please
Ban home made shanks. Isn’t that the SOP?
Ban underwear, ban shoes, ban water.
Meanwhile we get metal knives and forks, glass glasses and nice thin aluminum cans given to us on the plane.
If we had an efficient high speed rail system in America, I would absolutely prefer it to driving/flying/taking a bus. I would never take a bus over long distance. Amtrak from Washington to Oregon was spacious, but outdated and relatively slow. One of the best things about international travel in Asia and Europe is their investment in the rail system.
@ Kevin. Thank you for posting the link. It’s unfortunately that many will only read (watch/listen to) the headlines and end of story. As you wrote . . . welcome to biden’s America where the news conforms to the agenda.
