United Airlines now offers pre-order meals, snacks, and drinks in coach starting five days prior to departure. So far this is only available on some flights out of Chicago to 4 markets but will “expand to all flights over 1,500 miles by early fall.”
- Chicago – Honolulu
- Chicago – Orange County
- Chicago – Sacramento
- Chicago – San Diego
Hopefully this means that for those who pre-order food, that food will be available – that pre-order customers will be prioritized for the items catered on board.
Three years ago American Airlines started allowing passengers to pre-order food for sale in coach. So that offering from United isn’t new. The airline is careful to say here that they are the first U.S. airline to offer pre-order of snacks and beverages. Those are the less crucial piece, it isn’t often the airline runs out of specific alcoholic beverages at the start of a flight (unless the flight is miscatered). However packaging that first alone with pre-order coach meals make it sound more impressive.

American, however, isn’t serving food for sale or alcoholic beverages in coach and won’t do so until at least September 13 when the federal transportation mask mandate is slated to expire (unless extended).
