News and notes from around the interweb:
- United plans to expand aggressively at LAX, here are details and even a diagram.
- Man traveled to 32 countries on six continents and documented his trip by… taking a photo of his Hilton hotel room in each one. (HT: Marginal Revolution)
Eberhard’s research assistant found him a copy of the “Hilton Design and Construction Standards Manual,” which specifies, for example, that in every room there should be an upholstered lounge chair with arms. Side tables should be on either side of the bed, as well as two reading lamps. In almost all of Eberhard’s photos, there’s a big wall hanging behind the bed, which simultaneously serves as a sort of oversized backrest. Boxy black alarm clocks sit on one of the side tables in most photos, like a camouflaged time stamp.
- The viral video of a man quitting his job by cell phone at Heathrow airport turns out to have been a hoax.
- The Newport News Virginia airport is losing all state money because they used state funds to pay off a loan they guaranteed for People Express which then defaulted.
- Senior White House advisor and former national security editor for Breitbart was charged with bringing a 9 mm pistol through a TSA checkpoint at Reagan National Airport last year.
The Washington Post piece does readers a disservice though in describing an Alford plea as “mean[ing] a defendant acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to obtain a conviction” when the key attribute is that they continue to assert their innocence, basically contending the deal they’ve been offered is too good considering the odds of conviction. Not all jurisdictions allow Alford pleas.
