Up to 30% Bonus When You Buy Hyatt Points in June

Just like in June of 2012 and for one week earlier this year, Hyatt is offering a bonus of 10% – 30% on points purchases through the end of June.

The more points you purchase the higher the bonus.

  • 1000 – 9000 points gets a 10% bonus. Buying 9000 points means you receive 9900 points at a cost of 2.18 cents apiece.
  • 10,000 – 29,000 points gets a 20% bonus. Buying 29,000 points means you receive 34,800 points at a cost of 2 cents apiece.
  • 30,000 – 40,000 points gets you a 30% bonus. Buying 40,000 points means you receive 52,000 points at a cost of 1.846 cents apiece.

Hyatt Gold Passport allows a maximum purchase of 40,000 points per year.

I value Hyatt points at 1.5 cents apiece. I would not do this on a speculative basis. If you were going to buy some points to top off towards an award, it’s great that there’s a bonus.

There are a few situations where it would make sense to buy points instead of buying a hotel night:

  • With top-tier hotels especially like the Park Hyatts in Sydney and Maldives it can be cheaper to buy points and redeem them (though unlike Hilton and Starwood, award nights don’t count towards status — they also don’t earn points and Diamonds can’t use confirmed suite upgrades with them).
  • Hyatt points can be exceptionally well-leveraged to confirm suite upgrades cheap, though you do have to pay an eligible rate to do this.

Before thinking about buying points to get high-end hotels at a discount, consider the possibility of using Hyatt stay certificates to do the same thing.

Bonuses are better than no bonuses, of course, but I’m not pulling out the credit card on this one. Though if I needed to hit minimum spend for a big credit card bonus, I suppose there are worse things to spend money on than prepaid hotel nights.

Since this is frequently a question, points purchases are handled via Points.com so do not earn credit card spend bonuses.

  1. I thought award stays didn’t count for points/stays/nights, but my last award stay at a Hyatt House generated 350 points and 1 night/stay toward status. Maybe it was a glitch?

  2. No complaints here 🙂 Though, we only have 2 or 3 stays a year anyways so it doesn’t matter anyways. I’m self employed so no business stays at all and my wife is a teacher.
