A passenger once left something in a British Airways lavatory so horrible the plane had to turn around and go back to Heathrow.

On the other end of the spectrum, a different passenger once left 24 gold bars in the lavatory of a Jet Airways flight. They were found when the aircraft was being cleaned in Kolkata. And it proved to the world that Jet Airways does, in fact, clean their lavatories.

Smuggling gold into India and Bangladesh is incredibly common. Towards the beginning of the year smuggled gold was found on planes arriving in Hyderabad from Dubai five times in six weeks. That’s just one route.

Spot prices are high in both Bangladesh and India. The Indian import duty is high, so it’s not surprising that people would want to bring gold in there undetected. And it’s a common destination for illicit funds being taken out of the Gulf region and also parts of Asia as we learned when a North Korean diplomat was discovered trying to bring $1.4 million in gold into Dhaka.

Now Bangladeshi gold smuggling and lavatories are back in the news because across four recent incidents three passengers were arrested trying to bring in gold bars in their rectums and about $700,000 worth of gold was also found in a plane’s toilet.

The latest arrest occurred today when customs officials detained a person who had eight gold bars hidden inside his body at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the Daily Star reported.

The man had just stepped off a flight from Dubai and admitted to carrying the bars after being challenged at border control.

Later, at the airport toilet, he pushed out eight bars worth nearly £40,000.

On May 2 a man flew in from Kuala Lumpur and was caught with six bars of gold. They were in his rectum.

Meanwhile customs officials “acting on a tip” discovered 15 kilograms of gold in a Biman Bangladesh Airlines lavatory after it arrived from Bangkok.

What I want to know is who exactly is providing the ‘tips’ on where to find the gold?

Bangladeshi customs shared photos of the gold and an x-ray revealing the location of the bars to their Facebook page. Because, why not?
