Aer Lingus flight EI485, an Airbus A320 from Lisbon to Dublin, diverted to Cork, Ireland this evening after a 24 year old bit another passenger about an hour into the trip.
The man was restrained. He became “unwell and then fell unconscious.”
A medical emergency was declared, leading to the diversion, but the man died sometime prior to arrival.
The aircraft landed in Cork at 5:40pm local time. The 24 year old was pronounced dead onboard the aircraft after airport paramedics were unable to revive him.
Around 170 passengers and crew members have been taken from the plane and are now being interviewed by gardaí about the incident
One man, injured during the flight, has been taken to hospital.
RTE News says “passengers and crew members will return to Dublin by bus” while AirLive says “The passengers are expected to re-board the plane and fly to Dublin before midnight.”
The man was apparently Portuguese, studying in Ireland. There’s little to go on besides speculation about what caused him to become agitated or to fall unconscious. Thoughts are with the family members he may have left behind.
Sounds similar to the CSI episode “Unfriendly Skies,” where a man with undiagnosed encephalitis has behavioral changes and neuropathy due to the changes in air pressure from flying swelled his brain.
My thoughts go out to the deceased’s family, and to everyone who had to go through the event. I was on a TRANSPAC last year when a fellow passenger passed on, though quietly and not found until it was too late. It’s never fun to be near such things, and this one was even more traumatic for all involved.
