30% Bonus on Transfers from Marriott Points to United (And Other Hotel Points, Too)

When Marriott combined programs on August 18th they took all Starwood points balances and tripled them. And they kept the basics of the Starwood points transfers to miles system. So miles transfer 3:1 with most airline partners (instead of the old 1:1, but it’s effectively the same) and transfers into 20,000 miles earns 5000 bonus miles.

In other words, transferring 60,000 Marriott points yields 25,000 airline miles. When you transfer to United you also get a 10% bonus because of the Marriott-United RewardsPlus tie-in.

And right now United is offering a 30% bonus on Marriott transfers up to 25,000 extra miles. Registration is required, and transfers must be made by November 30.

The new program features devalued travel packages (simultaneous redemptions for hotel stays with mileage transfers), and travel packages no longer earn transfer bonuses anyway.

This is actually a 30% bonus from United on transfers from their various hotel partners into miles, and the 30% bonus is added on the total miles transferred across partners. I focus on Marriott here because the loss in value transferring points from other partners is generally too great to make it worthwhile however if you have expiring hotel points you need to unload it’s an option to consider.

The only thing I don’t like about this bonus is that the extra points won’t post until the conclusion of the offer, so they won’t be available to spend until December.

  1. Doing the math, that seems to be 1.19 United miles for every dollar spent on now on a Starwood Amex card giving two points per dollar, if you get every bonus: 60K –> 25K –> 27.5K (standard United bonus) –> 35.75K (30% bonus). Not great, but not bad, either, since getting more than one mile per dollar is getting harder. (Just Amex Blue, Chase UA Club, Chase Freedom/Ink, Virgin Atlantic Black, Amex Everyday and the BA companion pass for everyday spending, I think.)

  2. I like it. About to get the bonus on the Luxury card and United bookings coming up, though not so soon I can’t wait out the posting for that part of it. I’ll transfer the whole bonus with some other points, a total of 120k for 65,000 United miles. Well worth it to me, as I tend to value UA miles higher than most do, and hotel points lower, since there are just about always good alternatives to hotel chains.

  3. Hmm. “Bonus Miles will be credited into the member’s account on or before January 30, 2019.”

I just registered yesterday and transferred and the points posted without the bonus. I wonder how long that will take.

  4. Gary:
With the move of the program from SPG to Marriott, did they do anything to improve how rapidly the points transfer to the airlines? The only real downside of the old SPG transfer capability was the points transfer time lag — available awards could disappear before the points got to the airlines, since very few airlines will hold awards as a matter of policy (in some cases with a few airlines, individual phone reps apparently had and were willing to use the authority to do that on an ad hoc basis).
