$33 Transatlantic Fare, Limited Dates in June

Meridian Air has $33 one-way fares between Havana and Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Berlin in June.

Only very limited limited dates are available and it’s not even an error (HT: @ZachHonig).

Here’s Havana – Frankfurt on June 27:

Of course this is of very limited use:

  • Up until 2013 it was illegal for Cubans to leave the country without specific permission.

  • Now it’s just really hard, because while Cubans need only a passport (an exit permit is no longer required), this change was accompanied by an increase in the cost of a passport to the equivalent of ~ 5 months’ salary for the average Cuban citizen.

I tweeted out the deal, but that too was of limited use.

There’s a reason why this piece in The Onion was funny (although it boggles my mind that people believed it was real).

Many US tourists want to go before Cuba ‘changes’ which is to say they want to see it before the Cuban people benefit from development and are no longer in extreme poverty — or under such political subjugation.

Let’s hope that an opening up of Cuba does bring major changes, for the Cuban people.

  1. I guess if u live in Central America and r not US citizen u could fly to Havana and then on to Frankfurt

  2. “Sadly very few Cubans have the ability to leave the country, and relatively few have access to the (state censored) internet to learn of the deal.”

Even more sad is that very few Cubans can afford the $33. That’s almost a years salary unless one is a high level Party member.

“Many US tourists want to go before Cuba ‘changes’ which is to say they want to see it before the Cuban people benefit from development and are no longer in extreme poverty — or under such political subjugation. ”

Very true, but I find it strange that almost no one is saying this. Maybe someone will put together an “exotic country” tour package, with stops in Cuba, Haiti, and North Korea.
