Interesting (Targeted) Chase Sapphire Bonus For Existing Cardmembers

Chase is offering some Sapphire cardmembers 5000 bonus points for paying their monthly bill online from a Chase checking account.

We’re saying thanks with a 5,000 bonus-point offer

As our thanks to you for being a Chase credit card and checking account customer, we’re offering you 5,000 Ultimate Rewards® bonus points when you use your Chase checking account to make your monthly Chase Sapphire Preferred card payment.

Requirements

  1. Use chase.com or their mobile app to make 3 monthly payments from a Chase checking account to a Sapphire Preferred card April 1 and July 31, 2021.
  2. Each payment has to be made on time and for at least the minimum payment amount on the card statement. (Paying off the card is always better!)
  3. Receive 5000 points after completing these tasks, posted within 8 weeks after July 31.

The offer is targeted and it’s not clear what the targeting criteria is but check your email for a message with the subject line “we’re saying thanks with a 5,000 bonus-point offer” – it seems clear though that this requires having both an eligible card and a Chase checking account, and they may be looking at people who mail in checks or pay from outside the bank.

Be aware Chase flags in the offer terms that “we may be required to send you, and file with the IRS, a Form 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Income) or Form 1042-S (Foreign Person’s U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding) for the year in which you participate and are awarded the benefits of the offer/program.”

Comments

  1. Interestingly, I didn’t get this offer on my Chase Sapphire Reserve but got a similar one on my Chase Freedom card (not Freedom Flex). It offered $50 cash back instead of 5,000 UR points, though given that Freedom cash back normally works with UR points I wonder if it’ll turn out to be 5,000 UR points anyway.

  2. I also received the $50 offer (not 5k points). The offer mentioned nothing about registration and offered no way to register. I have Chase Freedom and a Chase checking account but always have paid off the card from another bank. I will take advantage of this offer.

  3. I received a Chase offer about 18 months ago with various incentives for setting up a Chase Checking and Savings account. Requirements included minimum balances – $15K for checking, $1K for Savings if I recall correctly; setting up direct deposit of paycheck or SS check, etc. I fulfilled all the requirements and the bonuses totaled over $900 in cash deposited in the account. I received a 2020 1099-MISC for the income.

  4. I keep a very old Chase checking account open just so that sites like Paypal won’t have access to my main checking account. I send my monthly credit card point cash redemptions to the old Chase account and sometimes pay part of my credit card bill by transfer from the old checking account. I am doing the three minimum balance credit card payments. It’s keeping it all about the points!! Looking forward to seeing if this actually works, an extra $50. Okay.
