News and notes from around the interweb:
- We rate this claim as true. American Airlines has an absolutely unreasonable same day change policy, tightened substantially after new US Airways management took over. What’s the point of having the largest domestic airline with the most hubs if you can’t use them to get where you’re going?
- Chris Guillebeau offers advice on being better about saying ‘no’. Not travel-related per se, but Chris has visited every country in the world and years ago wrote a book on earning miles and points (plus featured my award booking service in one of his many best-sellers.
I include it here because it hits close to home. I have a tendency to say yes to commitments I shouldn’t. If it’s far enough in the future, and fits in my calendar, I have a hard time saying no – and I regret it when the time comes around. I know a very high level corporate executive who had a difficulty saying no and that’s the reason he created many layers and bureaucratic hurdles between himself and outsiders, to keep people from having the chance to ask anything of him…
- Matthew Klint thinks France will ban U.S. tourists using Covid as an excuse in retribution for Australia cancelling their submarine deal. Here’s the story of what really happened with the U.S.-U.K.-Australia submarine deal that so enraged the French.
- Southwest flight attendants are the best. Though nothing will ever beat the GAAP Rap.
- Tequila Bottles Found on New Boeing Air Force One Jet in Development (WSJ) There’s little cooler than drinking on board Air Force One when no one is around, but take your empties with you!

I agree. American Airlines has one of the worst same-day change policies in the airline industry.
AA’s policy is so unhelpful it borders on useless.
I’d add that with the reduction in domestic flying outside of leisure destinations, it’s even less useful.
Why was the Tequila bottle story included? It’s behind a pay wall. Do you get kick-backs from WSJ?
Agreed, AA’s same day change policy is terrible. AS has the same awful policy. Is this a OneWorld thing?
I fly more on UA, in part because I can change departure, arrival, and connection cities.
Last week, during Hurricane Nicholas, my return flight to IAH was canceled. Later flights LAX-IAH were packed because of automatic rebooking, so I chose to go LAX-SFO-IAH.
AA and AS need to modernize their apps and give us the freedom to choose and change.
The Air Force One tequila bottle article is behind a paywall.
And technically it isn’t Air Force One unless the president is on it.
