News and notes from around the interweb:
- United realizes its customer data has value, that MileagePlus is literally in the data business, and they’re leaving money on the table. They’re looking to sell targeted ads to customers, based on the airline’s data about the customer.
Some of these targeted ads could appear on its in-flight entertainment system or on the app that people use to book tickets and check-in, people familiar with the matter said. United hasn’t made a decision yet and may choose not to launch a targeted-advertising business, some of the people said.
… If it decides to leverage passenger information for advertising purposes, it might make it possible for an advertiser—such as an entertainment company—to recommend one of its movies to a passenger who United knows occasionally vacations near the company’s theme parks and recently redeemed miles for merchandise from that company, according to a presentation viewed by The Wall Street Journal.

- The last American Airlines 737 comes out of storage. It’s a better passenger experience, with more legroom, better padded seats, and larger lavatories. But don’t worry, American Airlines is changing that before putting the aircraft back into service.
Little chance of the same thing happening to me on IndiGo because I turn off my cell phone before boarding. Also, India is not on my list of places to go to even though it is fairly close when I am in Southeast Asia.
Amtrak sucks because Congress has starved it of funds for decades, then complained about the results rather than giving Amtrak enough money to create a viable modern network. Ultimately the problem is that Congress is in charge of the budget. Your premise is correct but a little perspective is only fair.
